Foothill quarterback Drew Doxtator and wide receiver David Persi displayed fabulous chemistry Thursday. Doxtator found Persi for five touchdowns, leading the Falcons to a 42-18 victory over Eldorado. “David is a good enough athlete to finish catches,” Foothill coach Marty Redmond said. “We were a little bit sloppy at times, but we got it going when we needed to.”

The Battle for Boulder Highway has never featured an ending like this. Cory Fisher drilled a 32-yard field goal for Foothill with 57 seconds remaining Thursday, helping the Falcons beat rival Basic 30-27 in a Thursday Night Lights televised game.

After Foothill High senior wide receiver David Persi caught his third touchdown pass Friday, he raced back to the sidelines and told coaches visiting Sierra Vista couldn’t stop the play they had just ran. He was right. The 5-foot-8 slot receiver was wide open in the Sierra Vista secondary on two of the touchdowns he scored, racing untouched to the end zone. He scored 0n receptions of 13, 20 and 47 yards, helping the Falcons overcome an early two touchdown deficit in winning 57-44.

One of valley’s most storied programs declared that it was back with another powerhouse team. The Wildcats got the message across by knocking around the fellow perennial playoff-contending Foothill Falcons with a 61-32 victory.

Foothill High football coach Marty Redmond refuses to use injuries as an excuse for his team’s out-of-character bad season last year. Foothill, which is always in contention for the Southeast League crown, lost its top player — a Division I committed linebacker and wide receiver — for the season at the end of August in starting an unfortunate string of injuries. In total, all of the Falcons’ starting linebackers missed games, and by the final three weeks of the season, their Division-I prospect at quarterback was shutdown with a leg injury.

It’s Monday night under the lights on the Foothill High football field, and Falcons senior quarterback Drew Doxtator is putting on a clinic. The 6-foot-3 Doxtator is a prototypical drop-back passer, and judging by recruiting interest from college coaches this spring, he's a sure-thing Division I recruit.
