It’s safe to label the Foothill High football team as a state-champion contender. Some feel the Falcons are the favorites in the new Class 5A, Division II.

Foothill cemented its status Friday night by thoroughly beating visiting Durango, 47-7, to open league play. Mason Dew passed for four touchdowns, Avant Gates Jr. rushed for a pair of scores, and the Falcons (3-1) won by blowout fashion for a third straight week.

“Our offense was hitting on all cylinders,” Foothill coach Vernon Brown said. “When that’s happening, we are tough to stop.”

Dew, who has arguably been the top quarterback in Southern Nevada this season, had touchdown passes to Travis Kenzevich (13 yards), Braxton Bonnett (5 yards), Eugene Altobella III (15 yards) and Tarrell Mack-Lovely (25 yards).

Additionally, Hayden Findley had a fumble return for a touchdown.

Before anointing his team as a contender, Brown says they still have some work to do.

“We still need to play with more intensity defensively,” the coach said. “We are definitely improving but started off a little sluggish.”
