Colin Cowherd, once a Las Vegas TV personality, will co-host ESPN's SportsNation with Michelle Beadle.

Cowherd was never afraid to take a chance
Ron Kantowski:
Sat, Jul 4, 2009 (2 a.m.)
I used to call Colin Cowherd “The World’s Most Dangerous Sportscaster.” It was both a nod to the “World’s Most Dangerous Band,” which is what David Letterman called Paul Shaffer and his musical pals before they became “The CBS Orchestra,” and a tribute to Cowherd’s propensity for doing George Plimpton-esque stunts during his days as sports director for KVBC-TV, Channel 3.

Boxing: McCarter shows little ring rust against Raika despite lengthy layoff
Saturday, July 4, 2009
Layla McCarter didn’t end her long awaited rematch with Fujin Raika with the explosive knockout she’d hoped for Friday night, but the dazzling display of boxing she did put on at the South Point arena was as fitting as any fireworks exhibition reserved for later on this Independence day. The Las Vegas-based fighter scored a decisive unanimous decision victory, with all three judges scoring the bout 100-90, despite an 11-month hiatus from the ring. “I could definitely feel I was a little off early on, but it was good to knock some of that ring rust off,” said a smiling ...

'Flying Scotsman' out to win, but doesn't sweat it
Pro darts:
Friday, July 3, 2009
Gary “The Flying Scotsman” Anderson is a bit torn between the blue-collar life he led chiseling fireplaces out of marble and carving a name for himself in darts. “You get a bit lazy as a darts player,” he said Thursday at Mandalay Bay. He has attempted to bring the same discipline and work ethic he formed in 15 years at his former trade to the sport that has served as his livelihood since 2002.

The 9,214 in attendance assembled for one of Southern Nevada’s oldest Fourth of July traditions — the Las Vegas 51s’ annual fireworks extravaganza. The nine-minute display, which capped the 51s’ 2-0 victory against the Reno Aces, is in its 27th year and is annually one of the club’s most anticipated games. It was one of the first fireworks shows to commemorate the holiday this year in Las Vegas.

BOXING: Boxer's manager disputes documents that show $6.17 million lien
Thursday, July 2, 2009
Floyd Mayweather Jr. has said rumblings about his financial troubles are nothing more than rumors, but public records obtained by The Associated Press show the boxer nicknamed “Money” owes about $6.4 million to the Internal Revenue Service and others. The IRS hit the former pound-for-pound boxing king with a lien in October for $6.17 million in unpaid taxes from 2007, according to the Clark County Recorder in Las Vegas. A New Jersey Superior Court judgment from the same year shows he owes $193,000 in state taxes there.
