Without a game all week, the hype and anticipation for Saturday afternoon’s game at the Thomas & Mack reached levels arguably not seen since the early '90s. And somehow, the game delivered on those expectations. After nearly blowing a double-digit lead in the second half, UNLV junior guard Justin Hawkins made a steal in the final seconds that clinched the 14th-ranked Rebels’ 65-63 victory against No. 13 San Diego State.

On game day at Thomas & Mack, he’s the standout, coming in at 6-foot-1 and 400 pounds and collecting some of the loudest cheers by the final buzzer. He can’t dunk like Mike Moser or drain 3-pointers like Chace Stanback. But man, can he dance.

Dave Rice’s first meeting with The Guru as UNLV’s basketball coach was pretty simple. “I had a lot of confidence in him and I just wanted to empower him,” Rice said. The Guru is Jason Kabo, the Rebels’ strength and conditioning coach for the last 11 years. Rice was familiar with Kabo from his days as an assistant at UNLV and he admired his work from opposing sidelines up until returning to his alma mater.

When Mindy Rice’s youngest son, Dylan, was two years old, she could tell something was wrong. His speech hadn’t developed. Some doctors told her that it was nothing to worry about, but Mindy couldn’t ignore her gut. A mother knows. Three years later, Dylan was diagnosed with autism.

Anthony Marshall said he doesn’t look ahead on the schedule. When everybody’s asking him about the big game, he’s just focused on the next one. But this week is a little different. “It just so happens that that next game is that one game that everybody’s been talking about,” Marshall said. No. 14 UNLV hosts No. 13 San Diego State on Saturday at 1 p.m. The respective student sections have been going after each other on Twitter for several days. Tickets are all but gone.

About 700 tickets remain for the UNLV basketball team’s 1 p.m. Saturday game against visiting San Diego State at the Thomas & Mack Center and school officials anticipate a sellout before the day of the game. A majority of the remaining seats are located in the balcony section and priced starting at $25. There are a handful of seats in the plaza (the lower bowl), but those are single tickets.
