UNLV sophomore guard Oscar Bellfield poses with a copy of the Nov. 26, 2007 issue of Sports Illustrated, which featured a profile on him and other prep basketball players who found themselves in his shoes, gambling by waiting until after their senior season to decide their collegiate futures. It was a gamble, as Bellfield waited to test his value at full health in order to secure the best offer possible - a gamble which he now says paid off.

Whenever LaWanda Bellfield goes up or down the staircase in her home, she's reminded of her son Oscar's bold move. On the wall along that staircase is a framed copy of a feature on her son, published in Sports Illustrated two years ago this week. The headline — A Big-time Gamble — is in big, bold, black and blue type next to a full-page photo of Oscar, driving to the hoop in his Westchester High uniform.

UNLV FOOTBALL: Despite little meaning in the big picture, Rebels motivated for Saturday for several reasons
Tuesday, November 24, 2009
Both teams are 4-7, meaning both UNLV's and San Diego State's seasons officially come to a close on Saturday night, no matter the outcome of their regular season finale at Sam Boyd Stadium. There are enough factors that could keep most casual onlookers away, but the UNLV players still have a game to play. That won't change this week.

However, the Rebels are getting better. It only took them eight minutes to begin clicking Saturday night against Southern Illinois.

It’s early, Kruger says, and there’s still plenty to work on
Monday, November 23, 2009
Give it four more months, at least, and maybe UNLV basketball coach Lon Kruger will enjoy hearing such news … and believe it. Before he and his staff met with their players in their usual Sunday night academic meetings and team meal, Kruger chuckled just a bit about the Rebels leading the nation in Ratings Percentage Index.

Friday, November 20, 2009
One of the remaining redeeming qualities of UNLV's upcoming season finale on Nov. 28 at Sam Boyd Stadium against San Diego State was an opportunity to bid farewell to the school's all-time leading receiver — Ryan Wolfe. That will no longer be the case, as a broken foot suffered this week during practice ended his UNLV career.

Dennis Franchione is drenched during the closing seconds of his TCU team's 28-19 victory over Southern Cal in the Sun Bowl on Dec. 31, 1998 in El Paso, Texas. Franchione, in one season, turned the Horned Frogs from a 1-10 WAC doormat to a perennial winner. Could he do the same for UNLV?

When UNLV trailed 54-42 early in the second half, the Thomas & Mack Center was darn-near silent. By the end of the night, it was frenzied. That's what a 46-21 run can do for a home crowd. Freshmen Justin Hawkins and Anthony Marshall joined senior walk-on Steve Jones in igniting the spurt, as what once looked like a disappointing night for the Rebels turned into an all-around enjoyable victory for those in attendance.
