The week of August 26

Brewer's Picks
Last Season
157-41 (.792)

Brewer vs. Keefer

Las Vegas Sun reporters Ray Brewer and
Case Keefer attempt to pick
the winning team from prep contests
across the Las Vegas area.

Keefer's Picks
Last Season
163-35 (.823)

Both teams lost virtually their entire roster from last year, but Kyle Keplinger returns for Foothill and he’s a big-time difference maker.
Foothill 23, Durango 21

Despite the fact that purple is my least favorite color, it’s hard to imagine Durango losing here.
Durango 30, Foothill 17

Gorman hasn’t lost at home in the four-year history of Fertitta Field. Plus, its physical style of play and the Las Vegas heat will hinder Armwood.
Gorman 30, Armwood (Fla.) 16

Don’t let Brewer’s score fool you: This would be an upset. But it’s one the confident Gaels are capable of.
Gorman 21, Armwood (Fla.) 20

Arbor View returns more key players and will be ahead this stage of the season.
Arbor View 23, Liberty 20

Flip the score. The Liberty defense, with tackling machine Jared Tuilagi, is going to be tough this year.
Liberty 23, Arbor View 20

Palo Verde’s veterans on both sides of the line are too much for Canyon Springs.
Palo Verde 34, Canyon Springs 12

Pioneers receive unpleasant introduction to Dillon Chaisson and Josh Symonette.
Palo Verde 36, Canyon Springs 7

Let the Chris Marshall show begin.
Del Sol 38, Rancho 16

Dragons are on tap for a big year.
Del Sol 28, Rancho 10

Faith Lutheran beat Fountain Valley last year, but Green Valley won’t be so fortunate.
Fountain Valley 13, Green Valley 12

Gators have a lot of players returning who will use their experience to win a shootout in this one.
Green Valley 38, Fountain Valley 35

The only lopsided blowout of the season’s first Friday night.
Silverado 48, Bonanza 6

Not seeing how the Bengals hang with the physical, motivated Skyhawks.
Silverado 48, Bonanza 13

Hasaan Henderson and Farrell Victor get off to a great start.
Las Vegas 33, Snow Canyon 12

Who doesn’t love a Friday night game at Frank Nails Stadium?
Las Vegas 24, Snow Canyon 22

Desert Pines will be a major contender in the Northeast. Friday, however, they’ll struggle.
Pine View 40, Desert Pines 13

Pine View has beaten a Las Vegas team three years in a row by an average of 27 points.
Pine View 34, Desert Pines 20

Moapa Valley rides wave of momentum from last week’s win over Arizona’s Show Low.
Moapa Valley 28, Desert Hills 17

Thoughtfully giving Moapa Valley the chance to prove me wrong for the second week in a row.
Desert Hills 33, Moapa Valley 21

Basic is tough to beat at its Don Taylor Stadium, especially on opening night.
Basic 30, Cimarron 12

Have a feeling that Basic pulls out a dramatic victory.
Basic 17, Cimarron 14

Valley’s speed is too much for Virgin Valley to contain.
Valley 20, Virgin Valley 19

Expecting this to be a great game.
Virgin Valley 26, Valley 21

  1. you guys picked Chaparral and now you pick them against Armwood? C'mon now. I'm a BG alum and i'm hoping BG pulls off a close game against Armwood. Between the fact that Gorman got first game jitters and confidence out of the Chap game, and the travel, heat and first game kinks to be worked out by Armwood, plus their RB (#2 best RB in country) is out that might be enough for BG to have biggest win in school history. If they play like they played the second half against Chap they have a chance to win. I'll hope we win, my heart says BG 29 Armwood 28 my head says Armwood 35 BG 28..i hope my heart is right

  2. also i will not be picking against Moapa Valley the rest of the year. They did awesome in Phoenix i hope they carry that confidence and momentum the rest of the season

  3. Hey Tuasdad: I've said all summer that Gorman would lose against Chaparral and beat Armwood. Armwood is awesome, but I don't think they will handle the travel and heat. Should be a fun game. ...

  4. For the record, I didn't pick against Gorman last week. I liked the Gaels to beat Chaparral.

If it was for my life, I might go with Armwood on Friday. But I'm not backtracking on my proclamation that Gorman would go undefeated one week after making it. I probably didn't realize how good Armwood was when I said that, but that's how it goes. Gorman has a great chance....so why not?

  5. Thanks for pointing that out, sportsarefun. To clarify, the school district's schedule listed the game as Desert Hills @ Moapa Valley, but coach Lewis just confirmed that's incorrect.

Doesn't change either of our picks.

  6. I predidcted Gorman 50-Chaparral 7 or 14. And I'm predicting the same score for the Armwood game. I'm a defensive guy. Gorman's defense will dictate the game. Coach Sanchez is a defensive coach. He grinds those kids every day to bring out their talent and to know what winning is all about. Gorman's defense is the reason why the offense clicks like that. And for that reason they will be undefeated and state champ again.

  7. Sorry, my prediction came up short. But I'm proud of my gael's. They hung in there. Armwood was good also. It was a good game.

  8. SG1, go back to your momma's back room and beat your incest you know what. That's all you can do is talk bad about Gorman. You a big As......................H........................
