Green Valley hasn’t won a playoff game since 1997 — a fact that doesn’t sit well with the Gators.

“We’re not getting ahead of ourselves,” quarterback Nick Libonati said. “We’re going to focus on each game we play, but we will be thinking about (advancing through the playoffs). Our main goal is winning the division, but getting past that first round is a close second.”

The Gators, known best as a running team during coach Matt Gerber’s first two years, plan to pass more this fall with Libonati and receiver Kyle Larimer. The duo hooked up for four touchdowns last fall.

Green Valley, which opened in 1991, played for the state title in 1995, but lost. Its athletic department is one of the state’s best, including the girl’s golf team holding a national record for consecutive matches won.

The school was also the first in Nevada to drug test athletes, implementing a program last spring.
