The 5-foot-11, 200-pound Williams bested nearly 1,300 other recruits in early April by recording the highest score at Nike Football SPARQ Combine in Long Beach, Calif.

Then, the head coaching position opened at Durango High. Gerber, who was on Durango’s staff from 1998 to 2005, was hired Friday as the Trailblazers’ new coach. He was Green Valley High’s head coach for five years through the 2010 season before spending last year as the offensive coordinator at Silverado.

The Trailblazers have turned things around since, going a combined 15-5 in the last two regular seasons and making the playoffs both years.
