Looking back on what went wrong

Las Vegas Sun reporters Ray Brewer and Case Keefer discuss their failed attempt to predict the Southwest and Northwest divisions at the beginning of the season and break down this week's six playoff matchups.

The slate of six high school football playoff games on Thursday night each has an intriguing storyline.

In the Sunrise Regional semifinals, perennial power Las Vegas High can avenge its most significant defeat of the past decade when it hosts Foothill. Last year, Foothill upset Las Vegas in the quarterfinals to snap the Wildcats streak of six straight regional crowns.

Foothill was the regional’s lowest seeded team, but didn’t flinch in pulling off an upset for the ages.

In Thursday’s other Sunrise semifinal, Canyon Springs travels to Liberty also looking for revenge. Last year, Liberty topped Canyon Springs by one point in overtime of the regional quarterfinals.

Canyon Springs’ 2-point conversion attempt came up short to give Liberty a historic victory. The win was the program’s first playoff victory in its seven-year existence.

The Sunset Regional playoffs begin Thursday with four quarterfinal matchups.

Powers Palo Verde and Bishop Gorman are the top seeds, and both are expected to win by lopsided margins — Gorman against Shadow Ridge, and Palo Verde against Spring Valley.

Also, Arbor View and Desert Oasis are hosting quarterfinal games looking for their first playoff wins.

Arbor View, which opened in 2005, will play its first playoff game when the Aggies host Durango. Also, third-year Desert Oasis is hosting Centennial in its second straight year reaching the postseason.

Case Keefer, Edward Hauth, Ray Brewer and crew will keep you posted all night. Check back later as the scores become final.
