The last two weeks hadn’t played out the way Green Valley envisioned.
The Gators dropped consecutive contests against both Liberty and Bishop Gorman entering Friday’s game against Coronado.
“We certainly were questioning ourselves a little bit,” Green Valley coach Matt Gerber said. “We put it to the kids: How are you going to respond? We needed this game tonight.”
And they got it with a 27-13 victory.
Green Valley (3-3) jumped out to an early 17-0 lead against Coronado (2-3). Gerber said the Cougars made some adjustments at halftime to get back in the game, but it was too late.
Green Valley’s defense held up enough to notch the win for the Gators. Defensive lineman Richard Parris, safety Sean Ferraro and linebacker Zach Merced all made big plays for the Gators.
“They were flying out there,” Gerber said.
The game was emotional for the Gators, as senior lineman David Garcia was diagnosed with leukemia earlier this week. Gerber said Garcia was in the team’s thoughts all night.
