Last Week:
12-3

Season:
74-15

Brewer vs. Silver

Las Vegas Sun reporters Ray Brewer and
Steve Silver attempt to pick
the winning team from prep contests
across the Las Vegas area.

Silver's Picks
Last Week:
10-5

Season:
67-22

Green Valley will win its first league game.
Green Valley 15, Coronado 13

Can Green Valley recover from a brutal blowout to Gorman?
Green Valley 20, Coronado 7

Del Sol has hung on for victories the last three week. It won't be so fortunate against the 'Hawks.
Silverado 27, Del Sol 19

Silverado is a great team, but Del Sol seems to have luck on its side and we all know how important that is in this city.
Del Sol 28, Silverado 21

Basic should have beat Del Sol last week. The Wolves will correct their mistakes against Liberty.
Basic 31, Liberty 18

Basic is much tougher than most people realize.
Basic 24, Liberty 14

Desert Pines looks sharp in getting back on track.
Desert Pines 32, Valley 6

This is a great week for Desert Pines to start that playoff push.
Desert Pines 35, Valley 7

Did you know Las Vegas coach Chris Faircloth is a Chap grad — just like me? So, coach please be gentle on Friday night.
Las Vegas 50, Chaparral 0

Brewer can feel the pain already. This one is over before it starts.
Las Vegas 56, Chaparral 6

Canyon Springs is a legitimate contender.
Canyon Springs 42, Rancho 12

I have been pleasantly surprised by Canyon Springs this season.
Canyon Springs 35, Rancho 10

This longtime rivalry used to be one of the best games each fall. Not anymore.
Gorman 43, Bonanza 7

Hopefully no brawls this week because once again Gorman wins big.
Gorman 50, Bonanza 14

Desert Oasis will make the playoffs this fall. Not bad for a second year school.
Desert Oasis 32, Clark 22

Desert Oasis has a chance to run the table the rest of the year.
Desert Oasis 28, Clark 14

Spring Valley stops losing skid.
Spring Valley 39, Pahrump 6

Spring Valley has to pick it up if they want to make the playoffs.
Spring Valley 31, Pahrump 12

Anyone have a coin? I will take Western in a game that could go either way.
Western 19, Sierra Vista 16

Just to be different I'll go with Sierra Vista.
Sierra Vista 21, Western 20

Arbor View wins its second straight.
Arbor View 36, Faith Lutheran 13

Arbor View has a lot of ground to make up in order to see the postseason.
Arbor View 30, Faith Lutheran 10

Cheyenne can't find a replacement for injured Xavian Johnson.
Centennial 23, Cheyenne 19

Cheyenne gave Palo Verde a bit of a scare. I'll pick the upset this week.
Cheyenne 28, Centennial 20

And the Northwest Division champion is ...
Palo Verde 32, Legacy 19

What a bruising game this is going to be. I'm sticking with the Panthers.
Palo Verde 24, Legacy 17

Shadow Ridge hangs on for its first — and more than likely only — win of the season.
Shadow Ridge 14, Mojave 12

I really don't have a reason, but I'm going with Mojave.
Mojave 21, Shadow Ridge 13

This non-league tilt will more than likely be a preview of next month's Sunset Regional quarterfinals. I will take Cimarron over Durango in both games.
Cimarron 29, Durango 13

Another great matchup. I like Durango's tenacity, but Cimarron is too big and too fast for Trailblazers.
Cimarron 35, Durango 27

  1. No Moapa vs. Foothill prediction?

  2. That really is too bad that they didnt pick the Moapa-Foothill game. That one will really be the one that tells how Moapa would hang in 4A. Rancho would be struggling in 2A right now, that one doesn't count.

  3. Bigmike, I'll go with Foothill 28, Moapa 17.

    What is your prediction?

  4. That Legacy game will be pretty close

  5. On the south side I think a highly anticipated game will be Del Sol vs Silverado. Those are the top two teams in the division. I think Silverado will come out on top, but it will be a close game.

  6. I really want to pick Moapa in this one. It's going to be another close game in a week full of potential nail-biters (Legacy/Palo; Silverado/Del Sol; GV/Coronado; Basic/Liberty; D.O./Clark; Cent/Chey; Sierra Vista/Western; Shadow/Mojave; and the way Spring Valley is playing right now, I'm not even counting Pahrump out) They're a solid squad this season. Not necessarily the team they were last year (but last year's team would've been the 2 seed in any of the divisions in town last year, except maybe the NW, but a definite 3 seed there for sure). I like them in this one, simply because of how one-dimensional Foothill is riding Afoa. Nothing against the Falcons, and if they lose this game, it will definitely be nothing to be ashamed of. And it would be a really good win if they happen to win as well. This is a perfect matchup for both of these teams. Moapa has a very gritty defense and Foothill has a good weapon. We'll see how it unfolds. Moapa in a nail-biter 24-20.

  7. While I agree that last years Moapa team was probably the 4th or 5th best team regardless of classification (If you watched their state final game last year against Truckee, then you'll agree with me) this year's Moapa team has a lot less firepower. They have a new QB, RB, and O-Line. They've struggled to score points against quality opponents all year (sorry Rancho, I can't call you quality). I think this game will be a great test to see how good they actually are. Foothill is a playoff contender and probably would be ranked in about the 8-15 range. They were clearly outclassed by Palo Verde, but lost a nail-biter that could have gone either way to Del Sol (who is the Sunrise favorite right now) on the road. They beat 2 quality teams in Bonanza and Liberty. I predict a close one with Foothill winning this homecoming game 20-14.

  8. Del Sol isn't the sunrise favorite right now. They have struggled in every game except for Valley and Rancho and those teams aren't good, I mean Rancho lost to Moapa. Del Sol is coming up on the biggest game of the season @ Silverado. Which Del Sol team is going to show up, the one who burns everyone in the first quarter or the one that lets GOOD teams come back in the Fourth Quarter? Silverado is a GREAT team, the winner on Friday has the Sunrise in their hands. I think that Del Sol can't keep Silverado in check and Silverado takes this one 30-7.

  9. Wow, a blowout. I will definitely go back to what I always say, "If you can't stop the run, than you can't stop Silverado." You are right on with them barely getting out of games. I can't wait until Friday night!

  10. Not so fast on the blowout prediction. Word around here is that Silverado had some kids catch the flu this week. Plus, they have lost some key players to injuries. If this is true, I'm going to take Del Sol to stay unbeaten. To bad both teams didn't have their horses playing, maybe playoffs?

  11. As for Moapa and Foothill, if the Falcons are riding Afoa, then Moapa has a chance. Afoa had an ankle injury from the Patriots last week. They will have to see how much he can run the ball at game time. In spite of Liberty's loss last week, the Patriots defense really shortened up Afoa's rushing yards in that game compared to his earlier games. BUT you cannot discount Parker Riggin's throwing. He was mobile and threw some great passes. I don't think the game is as obvious as people might think. Moapa has a good chance if they can play mistake-free football.

  12. Del Sol will not stay unbeaten. Silverado has three running backs while Del Sol has one and if Reed gets shutdown its over. Silverado can pass the ball, they just haven't had to pass yet because nobody can stop the run. I'm telling you Silverado is so much better than any team in the Southeast. Even if they got players catch the flu their backups can beat most teams starters.

  13. Riggin can throw the ball, no doubt. But what the coaching staff lacks is the ability to switch things up once in a while and actually use their spread offense. Throw the ball for once!!! Foothill runs too much and with Afoa's injury last week against Liberty, they will depend on the passing game. From what I've seen, they hardly use their tight ends which happens to be a weapon out of the spread offense. Foothill's defense was on point last week against the "favorite" Patriots, but what everyone failed to remember is that Liberty has NEVER beaten the Falcons, NEVER. As for tonight's game, it will be a good one and the best team will win. But, anything can happen, especially on Homecoming night!

P.S. who dropped the ball and decided not to include the Foothill-Moapa Valley game in this week's picks? Good job LV Sun

  14. Brewer picks the games, but like I said, I'll take Foothill.

  15. Weiss threw for 258 yards and three touchdowns. Newton had 5 rec for 137 yards. Pirates scored on 7 of it's first 8 posessions. Way to go Pirates. Please tell me that Foothill is not a legitimate 4A playoff team. For all you Moapa Valley haters...What Now? Moapa can compete with most 4A teams. I'm not saying we'd beat Gorman, Palo, Legacy, etc. But I think the Pirates proved tonight they can play with 4A schools. And Steve Silver - please keep picking against the Pirates. I think it is good luck.
