Debating the valley's best kicker

This was seemingly the worst possible way Friday’s game could start for Basic.

A week after getting torched on the ground in a loss to Green Valley, Basic allowed Coronado’s Nate Webb to break a 70-yard touchdown run on its first possession.

“After that, I just felt like they came together and treated it as a challenge,” Basic coach Jeff Cahill said. “We really shut their offense down and they hardly gained any more yards.”

Basic throttled Coronado the rest of the way and escaped with a 35-14 win in front of its home crowd.

The defensive front seven turned things around by keeping Coronado’s offense out of whack all night. Pressure led to two interceptions, including one by DeVonte Boyd.

Boyd also caught two touchdown passes, while fellow standout receiver Darien Spencer grabbed one. Sophomore Antraye Johnson had more than 100 yards on the ground and two touchdowns.

“He’s really an all-around player for us,” Cahill said. “He’s done everything we’ve asked.”
