Las Vegas Sun sports reporters Ray Brewer and Case Keefer engage in a wide-ranging high school football conversation. In addition to their usual recap and upcoming picks, they discuss the area's best kickers.

I vote for Chase Brown from Gorman. You may not have heard of him, that's because he plays JV. Who is the varsity kicker for Gorman you ask! The kid that shanked one in a chance to tie the game against Armwood.
Let me be the first one to vote for Chase Brown, and the first one to call for the firing of Sanchez from Gorman.
Oh, I know, why would I say that. Let's just say, we all know Gorman has the best team money can buy. So, to put Gorman against the local competition is not a fair judge on good the team can really be. After all, all other teams have to play the hand they are dealt, Gorman, however, can stack the deck to their choosing.
All this being said, Gorman should be one of the elite programs in the country, and they are. The question is: can they compete against the national competition? The answer is.. not really. Gorman has traditionally lost against national foes, albeit, they crush the local competition.
Stick with Sanchez, and Gorman will slowly slide downhill.
I realize this post is a kicking post, those with opposing views, your comments are encouraged.
somebody sounds bitter...
"The question is: can they compete against the national competition? The answer is.. not really."
Did you miss the Chap and Armwood game? Losing a close game last year at De la Salle to the #2 team in the country that would have blown most teams out by 40-50 points? Huh?
But on the topic of kickers far and above the biggest loss to Gorman from last years squad wasn't USC or Miami bound players it was Colin Ditsworth the kicker who would have nailed that kick against Armwood even if it was 20 yards longer.
You post 4 times in 3 years...is your kid stuck on JV or something? Geez, Sg1 and Ray Cordova and plenty others love to call out Gorman, but at least they do it all the time. Your rants seems a little angry and personal. I can imagine it sucks for kids who work there butts off to watch Fertitta's get get every other carry against Clark but then again if you're not going to complain about the 9 million dollar facility, new uni's and swag then can't complain about playing time either.
Anyway I think Colin Ditsworth would have won the game for Gorman had he been playing this year, not just the field goal at the end but kickoffs went for touchbacks 95% of the time and he could nail 45+ yard field goals. Anyway, if Chase is as good as you advertise i look forward to him being called up for the Servite game
I vote for Rowe. I happened to be at the Bonanza v. Durango game and with 1:30 left he sealed the win with a 45 yard field goal that could have easily gone in from 7-10 yards farther back. What I was most impressed about was how calm and collected he was even after being iced with a timeout, having durango fans yelling as loud as possible, and having his own Bonanza fans chanting "Austin! Austin!" It was a pretty neat moment to see. I haven't seen Jay Maddox yet but I hope to see him in the near future.
I'm axiously monitoring this feed now ;D
Yeh, it is very disturbing to watch the Fertittas' run the Gorman Football program, like Jerry Jones from Dallas Cowboys. The only reason why Kline kicks for Gorman is because his mom is buddy buddy with the Fertittas', along with Danny Hong's parents', one of the worst QB's, I ever seen. Sanchez is just the middle man on the field, everything from the Pre-game speach in the Locker Room by Nicco's Mom & Dad, yeh why are women in the boys' locker room, because they paid for it that is why. To the crappie Caines' chicken after the game. How is it that in-coming freshman Nicco & Danny get moved up to a Varsity Program, when they are un-proven players', probably the same reason why Nicco's buddy Miles loupe who never even played Football before, but is so great he goes right to Varsity. These kids' are all ridding coat tails of the real players, just because of who thier parents' know, or what the Fertittas' the teams' owner wants.
Coach DD, as I have posted before I am not a Gorman supporter. But I do think it is quite funny how specific you are about the Gorman program. Ive been involved in high school football and it is clear that you are very disgruntled Gorman parent whose son is most likely a freshman playing on the 2nd or 3rd team. Again, when I was involved in high school football, I had many experiences with parents like you. So please do not disguise yourself as a "coach" with a name like "Coach DD." I am also quite sure that your son's position is either a DB or QB considering how you are calling out the two freshmen in Fertitta and Hong. As I have said before, Hong is very very good and he is one of the best freshmen QB's I have seen. Its not just me. I know for a fact that there will be college scouts/coaches coming to watch him play against Servite in the JV game next week and I have been told by my friends from Southern California who are still involved with high school and college football that several Pac12 schools are already in love with the Hong kid. As for the Fertitta kid, I have seen him play and he is good. He, along with Hong, was selected to the US Army 8th grade All-American game last year and I can tell you that all the money in the world will not get a player in that game if he is not good. Im all for taking shots at Gorman for their unfair advantage in giving full scholarships but you need to call it like it is with players. Just because your son is a 2nd or 3rd string DB or QB on the Gorman freshman team, you should not be calling out kids who are talented. Just tell your son to get better.
i can't sit here and pretend like there isn't a whole lot of favortism and puppetry at Gorman. But that happened long before Fertitta's and in every sport. It's part of any private school rich daddy pays for soccer uniforms and his ineligable son plays varsity. (see Gorman soccer 1999) While favortism screws harder working kids everywhere, it happened when i played pop warner and certainly happens elsewhere but i'm not gonna pretend like its not at a much greater level at Gorman... which sucks for those kids that should be out there but then again they've got a choice to go play at Palo or Durango or whatever school they'd rather play for, same with parents. As much as the Fertitta's fund Gorman, if 50 tuition paying players walked out and left the school it may bring some change. Or may not.
As for Gorman being most corrupt or political in country. That's a horrible exagerration. In town? Only behind Findlay. In Country? Not a chance. Mater Dei, Oaks Christian, St. Thomas Aquinas (FL) are much further down that path. Socal particularly.
STA Florida has like 8 alumi currently playing in the nfl, 40 in D1 colleges...Oaks Christian is run by whichever celebrities kids goes there and same for Mater Dei. Not claiming innonence for Gorman by any means, but in comparison they're not nationally ranked in corruption lol
Gorman football has had 4 great years, before that they were hardly relevant since the 80's... While Gorman has achieved more national prominance for their football team than any other in state than probably McQueen, locally I still put Vegas, McQueen, Palo and Wooster ahead in terms of local domination. If Gorman keeps it up for another 5 years then they'll be a mainstay not just a few good years
Tuasdad is correct. Favoritism happens everywhere and at most private schools with wealthy parents like Oaks Christian, Mater Dei, Servite, etc. But who cares about favoritism as its not favoritism that gives Gorman an unfair advantage. Favoritism just causes infighting within the school as a perfect example is CoachDD's bitterness. The unfair advantage is the Gorman offers full scholarships and the only other school that can do so is Faith Lutheran. The real problem with Southern Nevada high school football is that Gorman is the only private school. California has many private schools and so its more competitive.
Coach DD
I must agree you sound like a disgruntled parent but didn't you son get a sweat suit like everyone else and doesn't you son get feed after the game also ? I do agree with you about the favoritism that goes on at Gorman like you mentioned about the kicker they use, I'm using your statement (The only reason why Kline kicks for Gorman is because his mom is buddy buddy with the Fertittas', ) such a true statement well at least he will be remembered for not coming thru when needed and giving Gorman it's first loss EVER at their stadium such a legacy to be remembered for (perhaps Daniel Jackson is right he would be a better golfer as stated on Aug.28th ) I'm quoting his statement quote "Kline...poor lil' kicker. Here's a kid that looked scared stiff on the sideline for about 3 minutes just praying he wasn't going to get called in to save the game. But this is also a player that has had his roster spot purchased and should be carrying a golf bag" anyway enough about the poor little kicker.
I hear a lot about the Fertitta's I think it's great the way they support their team with sweatsuits and everything else the kids receive especially feeding the kids after the game if you are really a Coach shame on you ! You should appreciate the time and effort the Fetitta's put in for the program I'm sure you son does.
If you are going to rate kickers, you have to compare apples to apples. What tee sizes are they on etc. If one is still using a two inch tee they will get more height and distance BUT, when the time comes to go to a one inch or the ground they will struggle (they all do) and be further behind the one on a one inch or the ground. So, the kicker on a one inch tee in high school and is doing as well the guy on the two inch tee is the better kicker. Colleges will not even look at a kicker who is on a tee. so, the kicker who has gone down to the one inch tee or ground is going to have less of an adjustment. I know both Madox and Rowe go to the same camps and competitions. I vote Rowe...I too was at the Bonanza Durango game and not only was the field goal amazing I think all his kickoffs were touchbacks. I vote ROWE.
