The Bishop Gorman High football team will be in the national spotlight Saturday when they travel to Northern California to face nationally respected De La Salle. The game will be televised by CBS College Sports, giving the Gaels a chance to make a splash — for themselves and the Las Vegas area.
Zack Vergiels’ touchdown reception from kicker James Durbin on a fake field goal attempt Friday helped the Green Valley High football team beat host Coronado 26-6.
Vergiels also had two interceptions for the Gators, which rebounded after being shut out last week by Foothill.
“They took us to the wood shed last week,” Green Valley coach Matt Gerber said of the 33-0 loss to Foothill last week. “But in this division you have to have a short memory. If you have a bad week, you have to forget about it.”
The Gators' strong defensive effort included senior safety Ryan Lopez returning a fumble 25 yards for a touchdown. Aaron Love added a 15-yard touchdown run.
Coronado, which upset league power Basic last week, couldn’t duplicate last week’s performance. The Cougars fell to 2-2 on the year.
“Offensively, we just struggled,” Coronado coach Lance Cooper said. "We probably had seven or eight major dropped balls. We just couldn't get anything going. Green Valley did a good job. They outplayed us."
