Moapa Valley ekes out playoff win in overtime against Virgin Valley: Saturday, November 5, 2011; high school football:; By Case Keefer; A Dylan Mortensen extra point in overtime saved Moapa Valley from a shocking first round playoff upset to rival Virgin Valley Saturday afternoon. Mortensen booted the extra point through the uprights moments after his brother, Conner Mortensen, broke through in the end zone. Moapa Valley escaped with a 13-12 victory at home.

Moapa Valley finds success once again in the Hammer Game: Saturday, October 15, 2011; high school football: Moapa held rival Virgin Valley to less than 40 yards of total offense; By Case Keefer; OVERTON — Legend has it, at least by the understanding of Brent Lewis, that the hammer Moapa Valley and Virgin Valley play for annually in football spent more than 30 years in Mesquite. The rival 3A high schools began competing for the de facto trophy in the 1950s, but had to stop in the 1970s when the prank of stealing the hammer from the winning team became too prevalent. The hammer wasn’t reintroduced until the two schools’ principals reached an agreement in 2007.<

The visiting Pirates had the ball within the 10-yard line five times in the game but only managed to score one touchdown.

Virgin Valley shuts out Boulder City: Friday, October 8, 2010; By Case Keefer; Virgin Valley prevailed in one of the two biggest games of its season Friday night. With only three teams in Southern Nevada part of the state’s 3A division, every contest between those teams has playoff-type significance. The Bulldogs brought along playoff-type intensity and shut out Boulder City 29-0.

Virgin Valley tramples Mojave on the road: Friday, September 24, 2010; By Case Keefer; For Virgin Valley, it’s always a special feeling to come into Las Vegas and leave with a victory. It happened for the first time this season Friday night when the Bulldogs traveled to Mojave and easily disposed of the Rattlers, 33-0.

Virgin Valley falls to Cedar City: Friday, September 3, 2010; By Case Keefer; Entering its contest against Virgin Valley on Friday night, Cedar City (Utah) had played two games and not given up a point. The Bulldogs managed to crack the vaunted defense a little, but ultimately fell 45-20 to the Redmen.

Virgin Valley shuts out Utah school: Friday, August 27, 2010; By Case Keefer; As recently as two weeks ago, Daniel Gleave engaged in a fierce competition with Humberto Urias for the Virgin Valley starting quarterback job. Urias ultimately seized the job, but it appears Gleave found his own niche. Gleave caught a touchdown pass from Urias and recorded an interception Friday night as Virgin Valley shut out Kanab (Utah) 16-0.
