Members of the Virgin Valley High School football team are pictured during the Las Vegas Sun’s high school football media day at the Red Rock Resort on July 20, 2023. They include, from left, Asher Jackson and Chase Otteson.

Chase Otteson had 145 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Virgin Valley football team Friday night in a 51-14 win against Mater East.

But the standout receiver couldn’t finish the game because of injury and might not be able to play in the rivalry game next week against Moapa Valley, coach Matt Woods said.

It’s been that type of season for the Bulldogs, who are managing injuries to four starters and hoping for a complete lineup for the Hammer Game with Moapa Valley.

The Bulldogs have had to get creative in filing the gaps, such as having an offensive guard play tight end. And, like Friday night, they’ve been somewhat successful in piecing together a 5-3 record.

“If we can get healthy by the first round of the playoffs, we are going to be a tough out,” Woods said.

Quarterback Gunner Cortez rushed for 165 yards and two touchdowns, and Decker Lee had 150 yards and three rushing scores.
