Henderson gateway cries out for makeover
The entrance to Henderson along Boulder Highway from the north is hardly a welcoming sight.
By now you probably have heard that the Las Vegas City Council ...
By now you probably have heard that the Las Vegas City Council has on its agenda today the introduction of a proposal to raise elected official salaries by dramatic amounts - more than 50 percent for the council and more than 100 percent for the mayor. They should be raised. But this has been handled terribly - the huge increases - and given certain death - the inclusion of car allowances, a ridiculous perk. So be it. But what's almost as bad is the cover that city staffers have given the elected folks by preparing a "Business Impact Statement" that, ...

Editorial: Helping the victim
Media stories quickly followed, accompanied by the picture, and the girl was found Friday, four days after the information was released. The girl, now 7, was found living safely with her mother, who, authorities said, had no idea of the previous abuse. Police in Nye and Clark counties have been able to build a case against the suspects, something they wouldn't have been able to do if they hadn't released that information.
THE ELEVATOR
Who's headed toward the penthouse on the local sports scene - and who's getting the shaft.
For Love of the Game
Ann Beatty takes her eye from the camera to yell encouragement to the Foothill soccer team.
Jeff Haney tells how longtime insiders see online poker helping, instead of hurting, the game
Field, best known in Las Vegas as the founder and publisher of Card Player magazine from 1988 to 1993, was reminded of his former career after reading our recent column on the effects of Internet poker on established brick-and-mortar card rooms.
Clock ticks on strip club
Federal marshals are on a tight deadline to sell Crazy Horse Too before year's end , when the closed strip club stands to permanently lose its liquor license and , with it, much of its potential profitability.
Letter: GOP in Congress, Bush are ruining America
They watched as the president took us to war in Iraq based on faulty premises, ignored our generals' advice and mismanaged every aspect of the war there, and simply nod ded in support like bobble-head dolls.
Letter: President has every right to speak for us
Friday morning, while reading the letters to the editor in the Las Vegas Sun, I was disappointed that LaRue S. Boenig took such offense to that U.N. speech. Boenig says she is outraged, exasperated and that Bush displayed a complete lack of good sense when addressing the United Nations. Boenig wants to know where the president received the criterion on which to arrive at that conclusion .
Tourist hails what he thinks is a cab, and ride is straight downhill
The details are hazy, but what matters is plain: Mickey Tye Kelley thought he was hailing a cab.
Jon Ralston talks with Obama about his war foresight
But he used the fifth anniversary of his decision to come out against the war to deliver a frequently eloquent, obviously tendentious speech that was designed to say just that - to the Democratic electorate, to Sen. Hillary Clinton and to his other rivals for the presidential nomination.
CORRECTIONS
A story in the Sun on Monday incorrectly reported that K12 Inc., an online learning company based in Herndon, Va., was a wholly owned subsidiary of Knowledge Universe, an education holding company. In fact, K12 is owned by several investors, none of which holds a majority share. The story also incorrectly reported that Nevada pays K12 $5,200 for every student enrolled. That payment actually goes to the Nevada Virtual Academy, whose expenses include instructional costs and facilities and payment of $2,800 per student to K12 for online curriculum.
Editorial: Program needs investigating
At least this is how it looks on paper.
CLAUDE "BLACKIE" EVANS: 1935-2007
Born: Nov. 26, 1935, Duenweg , Mo.
Letter: Schooling in Nevada is worthwhile, valued
University of Never Leaving Vegas? The joke is old and somewhat true, but there are those of us who choose to not leave Las Vegas, who attended UNLV by choice and circumstance (not for lack of excellent academics or laziness), and who have used their experience, knowledge and expertise to give back to the community that raised us.
Editorial: Protecting our heritage
The report released Friday by the Government Accountability Office, the investigative arm of Congress, says parts of the Smithsonian's museums and its National Zoo are crumbling under a $2.5 billion construction and maintenance backlog, much of which the GAO cited as problematic in 2005.
