When students in Kyle Hageness’ college prep class at Arbor View High School began collecting donations for care packages for overseas troops, they expected to collect enough for 10 packages at most. But after the entire school community rallied around their efforts over the past three weeks, the students packaged, addressed and shipped 67 packages to troops around the world this morning.

Through the eyes of city officials, 150 acres of desert in Henderson are ground zero for what they hope will be a cultural revolution, beginning with a $61 million space and science center the city hopes to build through a public-private partnership.
Last week, the City Council appointed 10 people to a new advisory board that will be tasked with, among other things, raising funds for the center’s construction and recruiting a non-profit entity to operate it.

One of Henderson’s oldest neighborhoods got the city’s first green building Tuesday with the grand opening of the Henderson Police Department’s North Substation. The station, on Sunset Road two blocks east of Boulder Highway, is the city’s first to be certified by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) system.

While owners, attorneys, judges and creditors debate the future of the bankrupt Lake Las Vegas resort, a handful of residents are banding together to take a proactive role in the process.
The resort’s future has been cloudy since original developer Transcontinental Corp. defaulted on its loan and was foreclosed on in January 2008. The Atalon Group subsequently acquired the development and filed for bankruptcy in July, and the Nevada District of Federal Bankruptcy Court has since been swarmed by attorneys and filings on behalf of the resort’s owners and their dozens of creditors.

The timetable for reopening public pools and spas that needed upgrades to comply with a new federal regulation remained murky after a public meeting Wednesday at the Southern Nevada Health District. The Virginia Graeme Baker Act went into effect in December, requiring all public pools to be outfitted with anti-entrapment drain covers and other safety devices. It is named for the granddaughter of former Secretary of State James Baker, who died in 2002 at age 7 when she was pinned to the bottom of a hot tub by a drain.

The Green Valley Library Branch still has nearly two months of work left before it will be ready to reopen, but library administrators have opened up a small, temporary service near the entrance to provide basic services in the meantime.
