UNLV senior on watch list for award given to nation's top point guard

UNLV senior Anthony Marshall is on the watch list for the Bob Cousy Award, which is given annually to the nation’s top point guard, it was announced Thursday. Marshall is one of three Las Vegas high-school products and one of four Mountain West guards on the 86-player list. The other two locals are Kansas' Elijah Johnson (Cheyenne) and Baylor’s Pierre Jackson (Desert Pines).

No. 20 UNLV (7-1) has one eligible player who hasn’t played a minute this season. That will change Thursday night when the Rebels play La Verne. One game ahead of sophomore Khem Birch's addition to the lineup, freshman point guard Daquan Cook will make his Rebels debut in Orleans Arena in the 7 p.m. game on VegasTV. “He’ll definitely play in the game and I would expect him to play quality minutes,” UNLV coach Dave Rice said.

UNLV junior forward Mike Moser is day-to-day after MRI results came back negative Thursday. Moser is officially dealing with a left hip flexor strain, a slightly more specific diagnosis than he was given leading into the game he had to miss Tuesday at Portland.

UNLV basketball will start the season ranked No. 18 in the Associated Press preseason poll, which was released Friday. It’s the first time UNLV has received a preseason ranking from the AP since 1992-93. The Rebels started at No. 22 that year, and this year’s honor is the highest preseason ranking since they were on top of the college basketball world at No. 1 in 1990-91.

UNLV has made a scholarship offer to Bishop Gorman sophomore Chase Jeter, a source confirmed Thursday. Jeter is listed at 6-foot-8 and about 200 pounds, and he already holds offers from UCLA and Missouri, according to Scout.com.
