For a lot of kids in Texas, football is a way of life. The same could be said about hockey for Canadians. That’s why it’s a little surprising that UNLV junior offensive tackle Brett Boyko, a native of Saskatchewan, Canada, has never been to an NHL game.

It didn’t take long for Jamal Aytes to find his next destination. Less than 48 hours after UNLV announced the freshman forward had decided to leave the program, BYU announced it was welcoming him with open arms.

Freshman forward decides to leave Rebels program

The Rebels will lose some depth in the frontcourt as freshman forward Jamal Aytes has decided to transfer, coach Dave Rice announced this afternoon. Aytes was a late commitment to the Rebels, signing right before the fall semester started. “I have enjoyed my time at UNLV,” Aytes said in a statement, “but transferring gives me a better opportunity for playing time sooner in my career.”

Trio of Rebels receive 2nd-team All-Mountain West honors

UNLV placed three players on the All-Mountain West second team, the league announced today. Running back Tim Cornett, receiver Devante Davis and offensive lineman Brett Boyko all received the distinction after a 7-5 season that has the Rebels playing in the Heart of Dallas Bowl on Jan. 1.

The Rebels got the pick-me-up they needed today after an ugly defeat Tuesday night. Top-15 recruit Dwayne Morgan signed his national letter of intent and will enroll as a freshman next fall, UNLV coach Dave Rice announced.

UNLV learned today that Bryce Dejean-Jones suffered a strained hamstring in Friday’s exhibition loss to Dixie State. Rebels coach Dave Rice wouldn’t put a timetable on Dejean-Jones’ return but acknowledged that the junior guard is unlikely to play in Tuesday’s exhibition game or Friday’s regular-season opener against Portland State. Dejean-Jones left mid-play nine minutes into last Friday’s loss.

UNLV football has scheduled a home-and-home series with Northern Illinois beginning next season, it was announced today. The Rebels will host NIU next year and then travel to DeKalb, Ill., in 2015.

UNLV basketball schedules home-and-home series with Kansas

The UNLV basketball team will play a home-and-home series with Kansas starting in the 2014-15 season, the schools announced today. The Rebels will travel to Kansas next season and host the Jayhawks during the 2016-17 campaign. “We are very excited to start this series with Kansas,” UNLV coach Dave Rice said in a statement. “Kansas has one of the most successful, storied programs in college basketball history."
