UNLV Quick Hits:

Incoming Rebel’s latest effort solidifies place as nation’s elite dunker

Derrick Jones’ windmill from the free-throw line at Mendenhall Center might surpass jumping over four people as his top highlight (so far)

UNLV signee Derrick Jones’ dunking ability is no secret, but what he did over the weekend might have taken him to another level.

Jones, a 6-foot-7 forward from Radnor, Pa., was visiting Las Vegas and on Saturday several Rebels plus other local players were shooting around at the Mendenhall Center. Jones has won multiple dunk contests in the past few months, including jumping over four people, but the windmill from just inside the free-throw line captured by sophomore Jordan Cornish sent a wave through the basketball community that has yet to subside.

That was hardly the only dunk Jones unleashed while in town. Student manager Derek Malloy posted three others, featuring Jones’ head well above the rim, a 360 finish and another windmill with an assist from fellow incoming freshman Stephen Zimmerman.

Zimmerman is no stranger to dunk contests, either, as he finished second in the McDonald’s All-American event. With a better assist from Ronald McDonald, Zimmerman could have had a chance at the win, but when he, Jones, Jalen Poyser and Ike Nwamu are all on campus they could have their own dunk contest more loaded and entertaining than any official event.

Hopefully someone remembers to shoot some video.
