- The second time around, Nigel Williams-Goss found a better fit than UNLV. Williams-Goss, a 6-foot-4 senior-to-be guard at Findlay Prep, on Wednesday morning made his second college announcement: he’s going to Washington.

- New UNLV forward Roscoe Smith has a national title. He also has the No. 1 spot on Sportscenter’s worst plays of 2011. And he isn’t even halfway through college. Smith, who transferred last week to the Rebels from UConn, started as a freshman on the Huskies’ national-title team. Earlier in that season, on Jan. 8, 2011, he made a name for himself for another, much less flattering reason.

- Shaquile Carr knows his dream isn’t a popular one with the UNLV community. Carr, a 6-foot-1 point guard for the 16U Las Vegas Prospects, has a scholarship offer from the hometown Rebels. He’s received interest from Utah, UCLA, Oregon and on Tuesday night after practice he was supposed to call back Arizona coach Sean Miller.

- UConn transfer Roscoe Smith has committed to UNLV, CBSSports.com’s Jeff Goodman reported Friday afternoon. Smith announced last month he was leaving the Huskies in the wake of an NCAA ban on postseason play.

- The first state title of Demetris Morant’s senior year was a foregone conclusion. The last two were a bit of a surprise. Behind teammate Shabazz Muhammad’s 30 first-half points, Bishop Gorman rolled to the 4A state basketball title in Reno last February with a 96-51 victory against Hug High. There was never any doubt. Morant’s most recent trip to Reno was a much different experience.

- It turns out there is a tangible cost for victory, and in UNLV’s case that price is one iPhone. On May 6, with the Rebels (26-29, 7-17) in the heat of a race for the final spot in this weekend’s four-team Mountain West Conference baseball tournament in Las Vegas, UNLV scored four runs in the ninth inning for a crucial 5-4 victory at San Diego State.
- Dave Rice, Lon Kruger to co-host Coaches vs. Cancer event in Las Vegas

- UNLV coach Dave Rice and his predecessor, current Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger, will co-host the fifth annual Coaches vs. Cancer Party with a Purpose on Sunday at Hyde at Bellagio. The event is part of a national campaign benefitting the American Cancer Society.

- Anthony Bennett made it official Tuesday. Bennett, a 6-foot-8, 240-pound forward at Henderson’s Findlay Prep, signed a letter of intent to take his skills 12 miles north to UNLV’s campus. He’s the third Pilot graduate to make that trip.

- UNLV’s golf team — ranked No. 7 in the country — will head this week to the NCAA regional’s without coach Dwaine Knight, who’s recovering from a recent surgery. In his place, assistant coach JC Deacon will lead the team in the Greensboro Regional this Thursday-Saturday as it attempts to qualify for the national tournament. “I have full confidence in JC to lead our team at the NCAA Regional,” Knight said in a statement.
