From blue chip prospects to Division II recruits keeping the dream alive, signing day produced several memories in Las Vegas
Thursday, February 2, 2012
high school football:
Every high school football player has a different story to share on national signing day. There are usually plenty of tears of joy, smiles and hugs from loved ones, and the look of relief on the faces of recruits as they officially commit to a college by signing a letter of intent. Getting to the day, which always falls on the first Wednesday of February, is typically easier said than done for the athletes. In Las Vegas, this year’s recruiting cycle produced more than its share of noteworthy events. Here are some of their stories:

high school football: Senior tailback gains more than 200 yards, helps Gaels beat Palo Verde for third straight year and advance to state semifinals
Bishop Gorman High senior running back Shaquille Powell remembers his introduction to the rivalry football game with the neighboring Palo Verde Panthers with a small chuckle. As a freshman in 2008 during the Sunset Regional championship game against the Panthers, the public address announcer mistakenly called Powell another player on the Gorman roster after recording a 35-yard run. That turned out to be the least of his problems, with Gorman losing by five touchdowns that evening in its worst defeat in the last five years. Some three years later, Powell is continuing to make up for the loss. He rushed ...

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Rivalry has developed despite teams not playing in regular season, annually is valley's most important game
It didn’t take long for Bishop Gorman High football coach Tony Sanchez to realize the most important game on the Gaels’ schedule. When Sanchez was hired three years ago, one of the things stressed to him during his first days on the job was the importance of beating neighborhood rival Palo Verde — something he initially found odd because the annual meeting with Palo Verde isn’t a regularly scheduled game. It just appears that way. The Summerlin area schools will meet at 8 p.m. Friday at Gorman’s Fertitta Field in the Sunset Regional championship game, playing in the playoffs for ...

high school football: Palo Verde surrenders 20 unanswered points, then rallies past Centennial with seconds remaining
With less than two minutes remaining and Palo Verde High trailing visiting Centennial 20-16 in the Sunset Regional semifinals, the Panthers faced a fourth-and-seven from the Centennial 34-yard line with their undefeated season on the line. Palo Verde sophomore quarterback Parker Rost hit senior running back Jacob Witham on a screen pass and Witham made a defender miss to pick up 19 yards and extend the drive. “I took off right trying to get the linebacker to go with me and once he did, I just turned and threw it to Witham and he made a great run to get ...

high school football: A victory by Bishop Gorman and Palo Verde will set-up the highly-anticipated annual showdown between the perennial powers
Las Vegas High football coach James Thurman has stressed each week for his players to play a faceless opponent on Friday nights. Instead of worrying about the opposition — whether weak or strong — on the other side of the field, Thurman tells his players the first step to victory is executing their game plan successfully. On most Fridays in Las Vegas’ weak Northeast Division, the faceless opponent strategy is not overlooking a struggling opponent. But Thursday in the Sunset Regional semifinals, the Wildcats will face a tall order in beating host Liberty (9-1). Not only did the defending Sunrise ...
