Prosecutor weighs charges in death of soccer referee

A Utah prosecutor said Monday he plans to decide soon what charges to file against a teenager accused of punching a soccer referee who later died after slipping into a weeklong coma.

The Las Vegas 51s plated two runs in the second inning Sunday at the Sacramento RiverCats to take the lead for good in snapping a three-game losing streak with a 6-2 victory. Top pitching prospect Zack Wheeler (2-1) had his second straight solid outing for Las Vegas, striking out four and allowing three hits and no runs in five innings.

The fans started heading to the exits before the last round had even begun. That says plenty in boxing, a sport where controversial decisions are as commonplace as hand wraps and ring girls. There was just no possible way the judges were going to mess this one up. Floyd Mayweather Jr. was too quick, too evasive and too dominant for Robert Guerrero.

Vegas books hope Kentucky Derby favorites come up short for another year

Gamblers haven’t needed to worry about speeding past the pack to jockey for position in payout lines at Las Vegas race and sports books after the Kentucky Derby in recent years. There just hasn’t been a stable of winning tickets, not with the five-year drought since one of the morning-line favorites won horse racing’s biggest event. Local books would like to see the unpredictability continue in the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby.

That was during a stare-down pose after Friday’s weigh-in when Mayweather and Guerrero made their WBC welterweight championship official. Guerrero vows he will do the same come fight time Saturday night. “Nobody is intimidating me,” Guerrero exclaimed. “When we get in the ring, it’s on. That’s it.”
