Henderson firefighters battle garage blaze

When Henderson firefighters arrived at a residence near Boulder Highway and Racetrack Road about 7:45 p.m. Thursday, flames and smoke from a garage had engulfed a vehicle parked in the driveway.

That’s when the passionate fans off Henderson will be at the center of the most significant high school football game its community has seen in years.

Henry Kokoszka flipped a switch and — whoosh — a car caught fire. Kokoszka isn’t a magician. He’s a captain for the Henderson Fire Department who was in charge of starting a controlled car fire during a training exercise with the Henderson City Council.

Five men are being charged with a bank robbery scheme that was, if not successful, at least inventive. Rather than bust into a Wells Fargo in Henderson with guns drawn, authorities allege a team of men walked into the bank armed with a fake federal search warrant — a document they claimed gave them the authority to seize all the money in the bank’s vault.

A former substitute teacher was sentenced today to up to five years in prison for possession of child pornography. Aaron Ringewold, 26, pleaded guilty in August to two counts of possession of child pornography.

A Henderson man suffered second-degree burns to his hands while trying to extinguish a mattress fire Saturday afternoon. The man was trying to get a burning mattress out of a house at 19 California Way, near Boulder Highway and Lake Mead Drive.
Contractors plant trees and shrubbery in the backyard of Tiffany Egbert, 24, Friday as part of a free lawn make-over for the 2nd Annual Operation Green program sponsored by the Nevada State Contractors Board and Nevada Landscape Association.  Egbert's husband, Specialist Kevin Egbert, is currently serving in Afghanistan with the Army National Guard 1221st Calvary.

A look of disbelief and shock came over Rose Maria Gordon, 78, as she stepped out of her house in Las Vegas Friday morning to see her yard being landscaped for the second annual Operation Green Program. “Oh my god, I can’t believe this,” she said while covering her mouth with her hands.
Rayshaun Coleman appears in Henderson Justice Court on Thursday to face charges of first-degree murder, child abuse and neglect in the death of an infant earlier this year. The Clark County medical examiner testified the baby suffered from traumatic brain injuries.

A man accused of killing an infant told police that someone else must have entered the home earlier this year and brutally beat and burned the baby while the boy was sleeping, Henderson Police officers testified Thursday during a hearing in Henderson Justice Court.
Emmanuel Dozier, who is charged with shooting police officers during a SWAT raid on his house Dec. 23, sits through a preliminary hearing Jan. 20 at the Henderson Justice Court.
Trial delayed for man accused of shooting 3 officers

The trial has been postponed for a man accused of shooting three Metro SWAT officers who were serving a warrant last year at his Henderson home. Emmanuel Dozier was arrested after he allegedly shot at officers during a narcotics raid at his Seven Hills home on Dec. 28, 2008. His trial was set to begin Monday in front of District Court Judge Valorie Vega. It is now scheduled for May 3.

Chalk one up for the little guy. For years, high school coaches and athletic directors of programs in the state’s lower classifications have tried to convince promising athletes they could reach their dreams of receiving a college scholarship without playing in the public school-based large-school division. Looks like those coaches are right.
