Henderson honors families in Veterans Day event

Henderson held a Veterans Day Ceremony a couple days early on Saturday morning to honor people who served in the military and add six names to the Veterans Memorial Wall.
The Del Sol High football team celebrates winning the Henderson-based Southeast Division championship with a 46-26 victory against Coronado Friday night at Del Sol.  The winner annually receives the Henderson City Championship trophy.
Del Sol rallies without top rusher to win Southeast title
Running back Dezerick Reed has been the Del Sol High football team’s No. 1 option offensively every game this fall. But in one of the Dragons’ most important games of the season on Friday night, they had to rally without their top performer. Reed was benched after drawing a personal foul on a late hit in the second quarter against a player from visiting Coronado.

In Henderson, consolidated tax revenues continue to be lower than projected, and the city is likely to implement layoffs and program cuts early next year, a city spokesman said. Consolidated tax revenue — sales and other taxes allotted to Henderson by the state — for August were about 23 percent lower than those reported in August 2008. It was the largest month-over-month decrease on record.

The mother of a 19-year-old Henderson woman accused of suffocating her newborn son testified this morning she didn't know her daughter was pregnant. Angela Camero said she was home at the time but didn't know her daughter was giving birth to an 11-pound baby on Aug. 23. She said in Henderson Justice Court today that she neither saw nor heard a baby in the home. Findlay College Prep star guard Cory Joseph, who is still considering UNLV, wasn’t anywhere near the slaying of a Connecticut football player early Sunday morning. If a meeting at Huskies basketball coach Jim Calhoun’s home hadn’t gone long Saturday night, though, Joseph might have wound up outside a school-sponsored dance on the UConn campus, the scene of the tragedy, with some of its basketball players.
Carmela Camero, who is accused of killing her newborn son, appears in Henderson Justice Court Wednesday with attorney Kristine Kuzemka.
Autopsy inconclusive in alleged smothering death of baby

An autopsy failed to confirm the cause of death of a newborn baby whose mother is accused of smothering the child to death after giving birth at home, the Clark County coroner testified on Wednesday. Coroner Gary Telgenhoff said he filed the report as undetermined because he couldn’t find any abnormalities with the infant. He said the baby was not stillborn. “There are cases where people just die, but that’s rare,” Telgenhoff said. “People have been giving birth at home safely for years. My impression is he took many breaths.”

Festivities at the end of October include more than just Nevada Day; it is also the time to send out young people in great costumes to get candy. Halloween is a relatively tame holiday now, in comparison with its earlier roots. All Hallows Eve was once the night when specters, ghosts, witches and other unpleasant characters were on the prowl looking to torment unsuspecting people.
