David Walker rushed for three touchdowns and about 120 yards today for the host Cheyenne football team in a 38-0 victory against Cimarron-Memorial in the Duel in the Desert rivalry game.

The season opener for both schools, and the first varsity game of the season in Southern Nevada, was dominated by Cheyenne — and its defense — from start to finish. Cimarron-Memorial only seriously threatened to score once, advancing inside the Cheyenne 10-yard line in the final minutes of the game before the clock expired.

Cheyenne’s defense forced five turnovers and had numerous sacks and tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Linebacker George Carmona, the defensive captain, made multiple plays in the Cimarron-Memorial backfield.

Senior quarterback AJ McConnico passed for two touchdowns and rushed for another for Cheyenne, who led 19-0 at halftime. Cameron Myles had a 9-yard touchdown reception for Cheyenne to finish the scoring.

Cimarron-Memorial is rebuilding, with sophomore George Tribble starting at quarterback. Cheyenne has a veteran roster, led by seniors Walker and McConnico, and showed with one game they’ll be a threat in the Division I-A.
