How Bad Will it Get for UNLV Football?

Las Vegas Sun sports writers Ray Brewer, Case Keefer and Taylor Bern get into some numbers behind UNLV's dreadful 1-3 start to the season and make predictions on what's still to come. Well, at least two of them do.

The Rebels likely won’t need to wait on the NCAA making decisions on its own schedule this time around. UNLV coach Dave Rice said Thursday night that senior transfer Cody Doolin is completely cleared, while the team hasn’t submitted any paperwork for senior transfer Jerome Seagears because it's planning on redshirting him this season.

Last year, the program didn’t get the official word on Fresno State transfer Kevin Olekaibe until early November. Olekaibe was eventually cleared to play immediately after transferring to Las Vegas to be closer to his ailing father, who died earlier this week.

In August, Doolin, a point guard from San Francisco, was granted a full senior season. Then a few weeks ago, the NCAA informed UNLV that because Doolin met a few qualifications, including already graduating and this being the first transfer in his career, he’s cleared to play this season.

For Seagears, a combo guard from Rutgers, the Rebels plan to use his redshirt year and keep him around to play either guard position in the 2015-16 season. It was unclear whether a waiver request would have been granted for Seagears, who was at Rutgers when coach Mike Rice was fired and then returned last year after a brief stop at Auburn.

Assuming no other upperclassmen transfer in, Seagears would be the lone senior on next year’s roster.

With Seagears and junior guard Daquan Cook (torn ACL) both expected to sit out this season, sophomore Kendall Smith will likely be the main guy at backup point guard. Smith spent time at both guard positions last season.

On the recruiting front, UNLV welcomes class of 2015 point guard Justin Robinson for an official visit on Oct. 3. The Rebels have no commitments in the upcoming class.
