Washington forward Khem Birch blocks a shot by Atlanta center D.J. Shelton during their NBA Summer League game Saturday, July 12, 2014 at the Thomas & Mack Center.

Former Rebel Khem Birch is officially in the Miami Heat organization after signing with the team over the weekend, the Heat announced. Terms of the deal were not available.

Birch, who went undrafted in June after leaving UNLV a year early, had decided to join the Heat earlier this month, according to his agent, Mike George. However, he wasn’t under contract until last weekend.

After winning back-to-back Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year awards, Birch played in the NBA Summer League with the Washington Wizards, averaging 5 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in 19.3 minutes per game.

It’s unlikely that Birch will make the regular-season roster, but just signing with a team before training camp is a positive step. It’s possible Birch could end up with Miami’s D-League affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce.
