The Canyon Springs Pioneers finished off their regular season with a dominant 33-12 victory on senior night against the Las Vegas High School Wildcats, securing the No. 2 seed from the Northeast League and a home playoff game next week.
Sophomore Zaviontay Stevenson was the standout performer for Canyon Springs with a 50 yard punt return, an 83 yard touchdown run and a 90 yard run that led to another touchdown, this one by Diamante Luna. Eric Williams and Nigel Perry also scored.
Stevenson replaced Donnel Pumphrey, who left the game with a high ankle sprain. The Canyon tailback, who is one of the best in the state, is expected back for the playoffs.
The Canyon Springs defense, which has been outstanding all season, stopped the Wildcats on fourth down twice inside the 10 yard line.
The Pioneers, now 6-3, will play Basic in next week's Sunrise Regional quarterfinals.

Coolican covering a HS game? That's like using kobe beef on a burger. I could have covered the game for ya if you needed it that bad let Coolican stick to his opinion pieces.
Basic vs Canyon Springs II. I think the outcome will be a lot closer than last year when #4 seed Basic went to #1 seed Canyon Springs and spanked them in front of their home crowd of 12.
For Canyon Springs sake I hope they get some support from their school this time, they deserve it and i'll be picking them to win as long as Pumphrey is back and playing.
