When basketball coaching fails, it's back to football talking

Las Vegas Sun sports reporters Ray Brewer and Case Keefer recount their experience coaching the Las Vegas All-Star team against Findlay Prep in basketball and move on to football talk in the 11th Prep Sports Now of the year.

When the dust settles after tonight’s high school football games there will be just 14 Southern Nevada teams left with a game to play the following week. That’s less than half of the area’s teams.

Welcome to the playoffs — where one team stays alive to play another week, and players on the other team turn in their gear.

The Sunset Regional playoffs begin Friday with four quarterfinal games, including three-time defending state champion and Southwest League No. 1 seed Bishop Gorman hosting Shadow Ridge. The most interesting game of the night features Northwest No. 2 Palo Verde hosting Southwest No. 3 Legacy, which lost by just seven points last week to Centennial in proving they will be a tough team to eliminate.

The quarterfinal games also include undefeated Arbor View hosting Southwest No. 4 seed Desert Oasis, and Centennial taking on visiting Durango.

In the Sunrise Region, the regular season concludes tonight with a pair of games that will go a far way in deciding the region champion.

In the Southeast League, the winner of the Basic at Coronado game will earn the league’s No. 2 seed for the regional and host a quarterfinal game next week. And, in the Northeast, Canyon Springs and Las Vegas play for the No. 2 seed and a home playoff game.

Southeast League champion Liberty and Northeast League champion Green Valley also play Friday, and regardless of the outcome, both teams will be No. 1 seeds next week.

In the Division I-A, the winner in tonight's second week of playoff games earn a big-time reward: a spot in next week's state semifinals.

Cheyenne hosts Boulder City in a game that could be won by either team, while state favorite Moapa Valley takes on visiting Mojave.

Check back later for scores as the games go final.
