The Green Valley High football team committed a turnover on the first play of its season opener Friday against visiting Fountain Valley of California.
That fumble led to a touchdown, and the Gators could never recover, losing a high-scoring affair, 52-49. They were able to cut into a double-digit deficit in the second half but could never take the lead.
“We kept battling and kept battling. I’m proud of the kids for that,” Green Valley coach Brian Castro said.
Green Valley senior quarterback Jacob Olim passed for three touchdowns and rushed for another, twice throwing scoring strikes to Elijah Spann. Barry Cruvant also caught a touchdown for the Gators.
“The big thing for us is the kids fought all of the way,” Castro said. “Obviously, we are disappointed to lose. We are never happy about that. We have to shore some things up on offense and defense. If we take better care of the football, we don’t lose the game.”
Aaron Love had three rushing touchdowns for the Gators.
