Las Vegas Sun reporters Case Keefer and Ray Brewer break down the first week of high school football games and look ahead to this Friday's gridiron action.

Expanded coverage

The Bishop Gorman High football team still is ranked as one of the nation's top programs.

Despite dropping thei season opener two weeks ago to Hamilton High of Arizona, the Gaels (1-1) fell only 10 spots in the USA Today Super Index to No. 21.

Gorman, the defending state champion, had its 15-game winning streak snapped against Hamilton in a 24-17 defeat. But Hamilton is also ranked, making the loss not as big of an eye-sore on the Gaels' record.

Gorman rebounded last Saturday by beating Del Oro High of Northern California, 38-13. Del Oro is one of its area's most respected teams and also ranked in several national polls.

The Gaels' résumé, regardless of the blemish, is still impressive, coach Tony Sanchez said.

"We lost to the No. 10 team in the country in the final minute and then beat a top 100 team," Sanchez said.

The schedule won't get easier for Gorman. On Sept. 25, it travels to national power De La Salle of Northern California, which is ranked No. 12 in the Super Index.

Gorman is off this week and opens Southwest Division play Sept. 11 against Clark.

Hamilton (2-0) moved up six spots to No. 10.
