Expanded coverage
The Bishop Gorman High football team still is ranked as one of the nation's top programs.
Despite dropping thei season opener two weeks ago to Hamilton High of Arizona, the Gaels (1-1) fell only 10 spots in the USA Today Super Index to No. 21.
Gorman, the defending state champion, had its 15-game winning streak snapped against Hamilton in a 24-17 defeat. But Hamilton is also ranked, making the loss not as big of an eye-sore on the Gaels' record.
Gorman rebounded last Saturday by beating Del Oro High of Northern California, 38-13. Del Oro is one of its area's most respected teams and also ranked in several national polls.
The Gaels' résumé, regardless of the blemish, is still impressive, coach Tony Sanchez said.
"We lost to the No. 10 team in the country in the final minute and then beat a top 100 team," Sanchez said.
The schedule won't get easier for Gorman. On Sept. 25, it travels to national power De La Salle of Northern California, which is ranked No. 12 in the Super Index.
Gorman is off this week and opens Southwest Division play Sept. 11 against Clark.
Hamilton (2-0) moved up six spots to No. 10.

Best team money can buy.
Gorman will not lose to a team from Nevada for the next 5 years-at least. While they may stumble against Top 25 teams from across the nation, nobody in Nevada is even close.
Aloha VegasVegas,
My Brother or Sister, PLEASE stop HATING & support whoever's REPRESENTING Las Vegas, Nevada.
I'm assuming your son / daughter goes to Seirra Vista or a less talented high schools in the county and their SPORTS isn't as recognized. Meaning, they can't compete.
Lastly and concerning rules, ALL the high schools here don't contest to protocol (are you kidding me).
Have a positive & blessed day.
@poly - Great rationalization; "everybody does it"! I hope you are not in a position where you influence the next generation.
Bishop Gormom will just have to pay to recruit more now. Or fire the coach and double the next coach's salary..........
Poly, you say "stop hating" and then you deride Sierra Vista. That can't be how you feel.
Gang: This argument isn't reserved to Las Vegas. In several cities, supporters of teams in the public school system share similar thoughts about the private school they compete with. We can argue until we are blue in the face. Utlimately, at least in my humble opinion, Gorman's national success is great for the area. It brings attention to the successes of other schools and programs. Determining whether or not Gorman has broken any rules is the job of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association. And, in coach Tony Sanchez's two years at Gorman, there have been no violations. It's also important to note that several public schools have their own problems following guidelines. It's best to let the teenagers play the games, and the officials determine who is eligible to play in them.
VegasVegas... how do you think Palo Verde has been tops in football and basketball for 7 years? McQueen up north? By luck? You think 7 straight years to state tournaments for Palo is just luck of the draw with who lives in their zone? Las Vegas High? Get real. When Gorman is top 25 in the country and teams like Palo Verde give them a run for their money or beat them that gives Vegas more recognition. Gorman's football team had 9 division I recruits how much tape do you think recruiters watched? And maybe they saw somebody on the other team they would have never watched if it wasn't for the spotlight on gorman or palo etc...
Once again if any of you knew how many kids go to gorman on scholarship that don't play any sports at all you'd drop it by now.
The NIAA is up in Reno. Anytime they try to enforce the rules, Gorman's parents bring in the lawyers, and they have deeper pockets than the NIAA, which has NEVER won one of these confrontations. To say we should just let the officials determine who's eligible and who isn't is a joke. The Gorman parents decide who's eligible.
I know about many of the things that go on at Gorman. I went to school with CJ Watson who now plays for the Chicago Bulls. The kid was a class act, and while there were several other players who went to Gorman on financial assistance, there were many people like me.
I play no varsity sports, was atheist and had crappy grades for half the time i was there. But thankfully i was afforded a great opportunity.
So nobody i denying that there are athletes that get a free ride probably for no other reason than their skills, there are plenty of others. So it's not like Gorman can say "we cant give you assistance if you're good at sports".
If your kid is showing promise at a certain sport and you want them to get the most out of it and hopefully get a free college education you do everything to send them where they'll have the best chance of getting college attention. That's why parents know Vegas has a great program, so does Palo, Gorman etc... Centennial girls basketball, this doesn't happen by chance parents and kids know they need to try to get into those programs do maximize potential.
I love Palo's shirts they wore last year against Gorman "Thou shall not recruit" it was hilarious except that's the one public school that has no room to talk there.
Beatthewolfpack is one of those few arrogant folks that think money makes them better than others. It's easy to talk about money when you've been provided for all your life. Just because you have money doesn't mean you have class. Most of those rich alumni went to a much different Gorman. On Maryland Pkwy. across from "Bum park" with one crappy athletic field for all teams to share. We sucked at most sports save for a few years and the student body was more middle and upper than upper upper class as it is today.
WolfPack, your an idiot..you just ragged on about 97% of the student-athletes that make up the rest of the valley. Your just a little spoon-fed weasel who you think is the bomb.. Haaa,,,your a moron, I also live in Summerlin and don't have an almighty attitude like yours. And your stadium sucks!!! and your an UNR hiccup...you really don't have much going for you except this blog now, do you?
p8503l, i agree that wolfpack is a silver spoon fed fool, but that stadium is the baddest thing in this high school valley.
beatthewolfpack must have a small wee wee. All that money and you still have no class. Your self esteem must be horribly low if you need to toot your own horn like that.
I did the opposite. First I immigrated to the US started learning English at 7 years old. Grew up in one of Vegas' worst neighborhoods. Had the opportunity to attend Gorman which afforded me the opportunity to have a career and higher education where halfway through my twenties I own my home, have a new car and can afford to provide for my family where my kids go to private school and wife stays at home. I'm not driving a benze nor a range rover but I am doing well enough. I don't need a luxury car to boost my self esteem like some people.
beatthewolfpack reminds me of a person exactly opposite than you. A kid I went to Gorman with from the Tiberti family, they are loaded (tiberti fence, construction etc...) They could have gotten their kid any car he wanted. Instead he did not even get his license until the end of his senior year because his grades did not warrant it. Then he got a crappy beater. Earned it. Nothing wrong with being wealthy, although appreciating what you have and earning it is an invaluable lesson I imagine your kids may never know. I don't hate on people who were born into wealth, i have many humble hard working friends from Gorman that did just that.
You my friend are nothing without your money. Take away those monetary possessions and by your own admission you'd be nothing. I'm glad you made the most of the opportunities you were born into, it'd have been a shame if you had not. I guess top ten engineering schools don't teach class.
While I agree that BG is legit, a good topic for conversation is why Vegas is so bad in football. Zero fan support, zero facilities, zero community involvement. UNLV doesnt help the matter by being below .500 every year. And I agree with Brewer (for once) that many schools across the country fight the same battle with public vs private. St X in Cincinnati; St Thomas Aquanis in FL; Mater Dei and De La Salle in CA- all private schools that get their choice of the city's elite. Honestly-if I had a son, I'd send him to BG so he could experience a legit football program.
That's why I love Northern Nevada compared to southern. Even though the teams of the past decade haven't been as formidable or consistent as those of the 80's and 90's high school football up north is a community event. People that don't even have kids on the team go to watch, games are packed. But then again so are PTA meetings and other events. Southern Nevada is the epitome of worthless parenting and involvement.
VegasVegas...dont involve Liberty in this. Just because the name says "polynesianarms" and Liberty has polynesian coaches & players DOES NOT make your "guess" a valid one. It shows your ignorance if anything. You know damn well if this was a face-to-face discussion you wouldn't say anything like that... Make your point, keep your stereotypes to yourself, and leave Liberty out of it. We dont care about all the recruiting that does or doesnt go on. We do with the players we get. Plain and simple. Coach 'em up and put them on the field. End of story...
Your ignorance continues and I presume nothing! If you happen to know a couple of players that blah blah blah then good for you. Old news. Not concerned with how or why they're at Gorman. Point is...to us it doesn't matter who "should be" at Liberty. We work with the players that "ARE" at Liberty. We will coach the players we get. What happens elsewhere is not a concern to us at Liberty. And you are the presumptuous one for thinking Polynesianarms is from Liberty. End of Story!
Looks like i'm going to have to go to the liberty/Palo game see how it works out.
Wow. This might be the most ignorant argument I've ever seen. Every single one of you KNOWS your right. That Gorman's entire team is somehow bought. That the NIAA turns there cheek to what Gorman does because of money. Almost all of you have a "story" of a kid who got recruited by Gorman and apparently we offered him money. There is no persuading any of you to actually find out the truth because all of you are so set on hate and anger on 15-18 year old boys trying to make a name for themselves. It's absolutely amazing how people can say lies about Gorman while calling us immoral. It must take some kind of guy to come on this page and shoot out outlandish facts on their experiences with Gorman, but I've never seen anyone so caught up in there arrogance that they can't admit there wrong than a vegas parent.
