North Las Vegas officer involved in shooting resigns

Updated Monday, April 19, 2010 | 4:15 p.m.

A North Las Vegas police officer who was involved in a Feb. 13 shooting resigned from his position last week, police said today.

Brian Kolstad, whose badge was struck by a bullet during an exchange of gunfire, had been on administrative leave since discharging his weapon during the incident. Kolstad suffered minor injuries in the shooting.

On March 9 while on administrative leave, Kolstad was cited by Metro Police for his involvement in a hit-and-run accident, North Las Vegas Police spokesman Tim Bedwell said. He was cited by Metro Police because the accident occurred within Metro’s jurisdiction, Bedwell said.

The hit-and-run accident occurred at Alluring Avenue and Tapestry Park Street in the northwest part of the Las Vegas Valley, Metro spokesman Jay Rivera said.

Rivera said Kolstad hit a parked, black Dodge pickup truck and failed to leave his contact information for the driver. Traffic officers then went to Kolstad’s home, where they found evidence of his involvement, Rivera said.

Because of the citation, Kolstad will have to go to court, where a judge could sentence him to pay fines or suspend his driver’s license, Rivera said.

Kolstad was a North Las Vegas police officer for more than seven years.
