North Las Vegas Police ID officer involved in shooting

Officer-involved shooting

North Las Vegas Police today identified an officer involved in an exchange of gunfire Saturday night in which a bullet struck his badge.

Officer Brian Kolstad was on patrol about 9:55 p.m. in the area of Losee Road and Deer Springs Way when he heard shots coming from an apartment complex, police said.

The 31-year-old officer came upon a “suspicious person” near Deer Springs and McCarran Street and tried to stop him, police said. At that point, there was an exchange of gunfire between the officer and the suspect.

Kolstad, who has been with the department for more than seven years, suffered only minor injuries.

He is on paid leave awaiting the conclusion of an investigation, which is routine in officer-involved shootings.
