Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010 | 3:42 a.m.
Officer-involved shooting
A North Las Vegas Police officer was shot Saturday night, but the round struck his badge and he suffered only minor injuries, authorities said.
The officer was on patrol about 9:55 p.m. in the area of Losee Road and Deer Springs Way when he heard shots coming from an apartment complex, police said.
The 31-year-old officer, whose name was not immediately released, came upon a “suspicious person” near Deer Springs and McCarran Street and tried to stop him, police said.
At that point, there was an exchange of gunfire between the officer and the suspect in which the officer was struck. The suspect, who fled, may also have been hit, police said.
Police were searching for the gunman. No further details were released.

Probably had a "bullet proof" vest as well.
Seriously...baby killing axe murderer in the streets, home invasions, shooting police in the streets. This town has turned back time to the days of lawlessness...if you don't own a gun...buy one now. Learn to shoot it and carry it with you every where you go, keep it with you when taking a shower, while at the gym, in the movies and when needed...shoot to kill. A jury in this town, in time, will let you iff in revolt of this madness.
yes. PLEASE bring your good paying jobs to las vegas. it's such a nice place.
This is very crazy and the city is talking about laying of police officers I don't think so.
The police ae always seen on the streets in north las vegas. We have to get rid of the liberal thinking law makers and lawyers that are not letting us keep the loons behing bars. I stand beind our police dept, they are doing a very hard job and need us to back them up. We need to vote in people who are going to pass tougher laws for shooting police. No taking a plea.....you shoot a cop your gone for ever!
Why should there be stricter laws for shooting a police officer as opposed to shooting a citzen?
Pardon my intrupting the love fest for the officer involved but something does not smell right here and it aint the pig farm no pun intended. Getting hit in the badge is truly a million to one chance. I think we havent heard the entire story yet. N. Las Vegas police are very good at getting to the bottom of things and they will with this one too.
ya...they're good at getting to the bottom of things...someone's bank account.
I live in that apartment complex and definitely heard plenty of gunfire last night. There was about 3-5 shots and then a few minutes later more shots and then all the sirens and helicopter for hours on end. Hard to believe they lost the moron... he probably ran over to the VA Hospital construction site.
Glad you are okay Brother... Get well soon...
I used to live a few miles from there.....bet it was a brotha!
We don't need no steenkin badges
The badge didn't save the officer, it was the bullet proof vest underneath. If the police weren't 70-90 officers understaff as reported in the paper, maybe he would have been riding with a partner and they would have got the shooter.
More time at the range at night and required use of lazer scopes would help.
You are incorrect when you say a "round" hit the officers badge. A "round" (or cartridge) is the casing, powder, primer and bullet as one unit. Its what you put into a gun BEFORE you shoot it. The only thing that leaves the gun is the bullet. It was the BULLET that hit the officers badge, not a round.
A "round" is a term synonymous with a fully loaded cartridge containing a projectile (bullet), propellant, primer and casing.

Honestly, everyone needs to chill out. For the amount of people we have here and the amount of tourists that don't live here but are here, our crime is just like any other big city. I would much rather live here and not worry about being victimized than live in Los Angeles.
Sky Marshal,
Your expert opinion (or arrogance) wasn't needed on here. So you can crawl back under your pathetic rock and maybe even search for a personality.
Any attack on our officers is an attack on the whole community. I am outraged, as all decent, lawful minded members of our community should be.
And yes, I apply this same standard to police misconduct. I am outraged when an officer abuses our trust.
I am glad the officer is ok and I hope they catch this felon soon.
Doc,
First, thank you for the compliment.
Second, any time a major city newspaper screws up a headline, they should be corrected. That's why every paper has an email address for anyone to inform them of "corrections."
And if you notice the recent headline on FOX New's website, they correctly changed their headline to read "bullet."
To say that proper terminology is not a big deal and should not be used by a newspaper, tells me that you are a prodigy of the Las Vegas school system.
And your disregard for the proper usage of ammo nomenclature also tells me you are not an admirer of the Second Amendment.
As such, to be the recipient of your ad hominan attack, is a privilege Sir.
I have to agree with NoVasline. I think everybody arming themselves is about the only thing to do if we are that short officers. When I get home work late at night I drive around my neighborhood making sure there are no thugs hiding or hanging around around. It is pretty bad though.
Agree with Doc. A cop was almost killed, but at least Sky Guy knows his technical terms. Please go away. (No surprise he's quoting Fox).
If I was a Sky Marshall, I wouldnt brag. With all the screw-ups, you have nothing to brag about.
Vegas Guy, if a cop was almost killed, all the more reason to report the facts correctly. The cop was not hit with a round. Nobody was standing there throwing rounds at him.
ManAboutown, I agree with you 100%. The Federal Air Marshal Service is the most screwed up and corrupt federal agency in the government. Bragging? Where was I bragging about it?
No one cares about them calling it a round instead of a bullet. People know what a round commonly means to most people. Sure, it isn't technically correct, but this article is not being written to be used in court or a lab. People who get hung up on something so simple as calling a bullet a round should really get a life. Besides, if you want to get into technical legal terms, it would actually be called a projectile. ;)
Vegas Sky Marshal, you are correct and the newspaper should at all times report only facts. This news paper and the LVRJ is so eager to post articles about the police departments, usually negative, they never report the facts or get it accurate. This is due mostly to the police departments restricting information until the investigation is over and the facts are straight. This should be the case for newspapers. Do not report a story until your facts and information is correct.
and his new favorite movie is? Returner (2002) and his new favorite book is? The Red Badge of Courage.
My Father was a FBI Special Agent in Colorado where I had grown up. He had only pulled his gun once, after that day my father was never the same. I have the highest regard for all in the Justice Department. They have mostly good and some bad. I write this because if one or both of your parents are in the police dept, you will never know if you are going to see them when you get home. That is hard for anybody to go thought. And all cities have the same problems, just remember the folks in "9-11" they worked together to save many lives , at the cost of there's. God Bless we need to work together.
"The officer was on patrol about 9:55 p.m. in the area of Losee Road and Deer Springs Way when he heard shots coming from an apartment complex, police said"
Sounds like a real nice complex, ehh?
"Sure, it isn't technically correct"
When a newspaper is allowed by its readers NOT to be technically correct in its reporting, and "no one cares" whether it is correct in its reporting, then the newspaper becomes nothing more than a gossip magazine.
I bet if the article was about YOU . . . . you'd suddenly care.
Not sure why everyone is taking Sky Marshall to task for noting the incorrectness of the word choice. I appreciate the fact that he is out there clarifying and educating. Perhaps it will stick with the reporters.
How many times has a Sky Marshall had to draw and fire a 'round'?
Answer:
Only on the firing range and in his dreams.
United, it is a nice complex. It is the only physical structure prior to 215. It is nice looking, just happens to be a few bad eggs there. There was a murder there within the past year also... sort of domestic dispute related.
Sky Marshal, you come on here and attempt to use impressive vocabulary for what? Are you trying to find a woman? Are you insecure in your manhood? It would seem you have some kind of retarded hidden agenda. Oh my gosh, was that not politically correct? Better call the PC Police.
Oh and Ms. Sky Marshal, I very much appreciate the 2nd amendment. I own several firearms. That still doesn't change the fact that nobody except you and one other idiot care about that fact that they said round instead of bullet.
Doc,I know what you mean. I was referring to a resident.
I watched a funny movie the other night (Shanghai Noon) in which the corrupt sheriff gets shot through his badge. Thank God the officers badge was heavier duty.
To: The uninformed Taxpayer and the usual Cop Haters.
Sadly, I notice that this forum is mostly cop haters.
To say that it was a miracle and God's Will that the bullet hit the officer's badge is an understatement. I am glad to hear that the injuries were minor and that the officer will fully recover.
I am an old cop (36 years in Law Enforcement) and the current trend in lawlessness that I see happening in our community is very disturbing. Worst yet, I don't see it improving in the near future, especially with our current economic dilemma.
I suspect that Trust in our Government Leaders is pretty much down in the dumps, and is usually reflective by the way our citizens obey the law and interact with their Police.
Until Las Vegas decides that they want Honest Leadership from their government officials and get away from the "Good Old Boy System", then we are doomed and headed for destruction.
The up and coming elections will offer you thought provoking choices, become involved, become informed and follow your heart and VOTE.
Remember to Keep your Faith, Keep your Gun, and they can Keep the Change.
Just an old cop reflecting,
Gordon Martines
I carry my weapon on me all the time, this Valley is gettin crazier every year. I'ts not just North town , it's everywhere. People need to take the CCW class and be licensed to carry, the cops just can't be there all the time , you have to defend yourself and your loved ones. Go , go everyone ,go buy a gun, (unless you have a record of violence)Stop the bad guy in his tracks, and keep court costs down.
Thats right fedup2here, I have my gun, my beer and my 4x4 and that SOB better not cut me off again
Welcome to the Wild Wild West!!
Maybe next time someone should call the fire department to make these patrols.
Having worked as a security officer in the Boulevard Mall, and also worked with the Las Vegas police Dept.who assissted us at holiday times, I would only offer praise to these officers and not belittle them, you never know when you are going to need one of these officers, so, all those people who want to show no respect, lighten up and show some respect. Yours London, England, UK.
