A second toddler in a week has died after being pulled from a backyard swimming pool, the latest incident occurring Monday afternoon in North Las Vegas, police said.

North Las Vegas police and paramedics were called at about 3:14 p.m. to the 3100 block of Van Der Meer Street just south of Cheyenne Avenue after a 2-year-old boy was pulled from a pool, said Chrissie Coon, spokeswoman for North Las Vegas Police Department.

The child was taken to North Vista Hospital, where he later died.

"Detectives will conduct a thorough death investigation to determine whether or not the circumstances around this child’s death rise to a criminal level. At this time, no charges have been filed," the police department said in a statement.

Last Tuesday, an 18-month-old boy, Jordan Williams, drowned in a hot tub next to a swimming pool in the backyard of his day care center at 4731 Gunlock Circle in North Las Vegas. Another 3-year-old boy was pulled from the hot tub, but survived.

North Las Vegas police are still conducting a criminal investigation into that drowning, Coon said.

  1. W.T.F.??????????????????

  2. According to CDC stats, a child under 8 is twenty times more likely to die in a swimming pool or hot tub than to die by gunfire.

Among children ages 1 to 4 years, most drownings occur in residential swimming pools. Most young children who drowned in pools were last seen in the home, had been out of sight less than five minutes, and were in the care of one or both parents at the time. Barriers, such as pool fencing, can help prevent children from gaining access to the pool area without caregivers' awareness.

Designate a responsible adult to watch young children while in the bath and all children swimming or playing in or around water. Adults should not be involved in any other distracting activity (such as reading, consuming alcohol playing cards, talking on the phone, or mowing the lawn) while supervising children.
