  • As expected, Athlete’s First claims NYBC crown … but AZ Rush comes out OK, too

    By Ryan Greene · July 31, 2008 · 7:09 p.m.

The team that was using this week's trip to Las Vegas on Thursday morning still looked like it was, well, on vacation. The team that was supposed to get run out of the gym lost by 34 points. But it got much more out of the experience than the victors, that's for sure.

  • Oklahoma squad, both road-weary and recruiting-weary, finds oasis in Las Vegas

    By Ryan Greene · July 29, 2008 · 7:25 p.m.

If this were last week, Daniel Orton and Xavier Henry probably would have been able to hear the chatter from the stands behind their bench in Spring Valley High. That was when three of the bigger events of the prep summer schedule - the adidas Super 64, the Reebok Summer Championships and the Main Event sponsored by Nike - had gyms across town filled, with both spectators and college coaches.

    By Rob Miech · July 29, 2008 · 2:31 p.m.

Coach Ro Russell was in no hurry to downplay the significance of his Grassroots Canada Elite squad's championship-clinching win Saturday night at Rancho High in the adidas Super 64 tournament. "This is the biggest win for Canadian basketball in amateur history - A major tournament, with all the top-ranked teams," Russell said.

  • UNLV commit Hawkins locks down local standouts, pushes Magic into adidas semis

    By Ryan Greene · July 25, 2008 · 11:58 p.m.

When Justin Hawkins gave his verbal pledge to Lon Kruger and UNLV last fall, he'll admit, he didn't really know a whole ton about the program's history outside of the obvious basics. Then came the research. And with that, further affirmation that he'd made the right decision.

  • UNLV target Gallon far from 'Tiny'

    By Ryan Greene · July 24, 2008 · 10:56 p.m.

How’s this for a nickname that just doesn’t fit? A 6-foot-9, 295-pound bull of a power forward who goes by ‘Tiny’. Yes, he exists. He’s here in Las Vegas this week, actually. If you don’t believe it, he’s certainly worth seeing. He leads his Houston Hoops team into bracket play in the Main Event today at 9:05 a.m. at Spring Valley High.

    By Rob Miech · July 24, 2008 · 9:54 p.m.

No. 42 for the Worldwide Renegades of Atlanta dragged that big old burden into the Silverado High auxiliary gym Thursday night at the Reebok Summer Championships.

  • From Iranian hoop courts to Las Vegas, with love

    By Rob Miech · July 24, 2008 · 10:05 a.m.

If there’s a player at the three summer prep tournaments in Las Vegas that hustles more than Arsaland Kazami, we’d like to see him.

  • Local stars Johnson and Marshall team up at adidas Super 64 … and maybe at the next level, too?

    By Ryan Greene · July 24, 2008 · 2:06 a.m.

The text message not only made Anthony Marshall laugh out loud, but it also conjured up some fond memories. Marshall - a senior-to-be at Mojave - got the news on his cell phone late Tuesday that he'd have a familiar face as a Las Vegas Prospects teammate starting Wednesday in the adidas Super 64 at Rancho High. The alert came from fellow local blue chip prospect Elijah Johnson.

  • Grensing, UNLV staff, enjoy benefits of having prep hoops heaven in their backyard

    By Ryan Greene · July 23, 2008 · 5:48 a.m.

In a perfect world, for the UNLV coaching staff, the players it wants in the upcoming graduation classes would show up this week and/or next in Las Vegas for summer prep tournament ball, and they'd be sold. They'd see the Strip lit up at night, they'd take a drive on the freeways and see the scenic mountain ranges in the distance and they'd feel that fabled 'dry heat.' Done. After that, they'd ask where the dotted line is for them to sign on.

  • Self tries to reload just like everyone else in Vegas

    By Ryan Greene · July 23, 2008 · 4:41 a.m.

Hang around Bill Self long enough this week during summer prep tournament action in Las Vegas, and you might think he's recently changed his legal last name to 'Congratulations.'

Every summer hundreds of high-schoolers come to Las Vegas to take part in some of the most elite prep basketball tournaments. Three events (adidas Super 64, Reebok’s Summer Championships and The Main Event) dominated this summer's circuit.

  • Prospects guards hoping to prosper

    By Christopher Drexel · July 23, 2008 · midnight

HangOne glance in the stands reveals the crowds at these basketball games are a little different. Gone are the chanting teenagers from the high school season, who are replaced by rows and rows of middle-aged men holding stacks of rosters, clip boards and notes, all wearing logos of different colleges.
