- Basic coach expecting a smooth transition
- Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008
With 12 first-year coaches taking the field in Southern Nevada this season, likely none will have a smoother transition than Basic’s Jeff Cahill. Cahill, a 1992 Basic graduate, is a product of the Wolves’ system in every sense. He grew up with his father, Dan Cahill, coaching in the program and played under longtime coach Cliff Frazier for four years. He returned to Basic in 2002 as a junior varsity coach and now, following Frazier’s retirement last winter after 15 years, takes over a program he calls the most storied in Nevada.

- Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008
First-year Coronado coach John Mannion didn’t walk into a perfect situation when he took over the Cougars’ program late last spring. Mannion was hired May 30, a time in the offseason when most programs are deep into the planning phase for the upcoming fall. He also had the task of replacing several key graduates from last year’s playoff-qualifying squad that rattled off a five-game winning streak to end the regular season. “We definitely have a lot of work to do,” said Mannion, formerly Del Sol’s defensive coordinator.

When it comes to state titles, the Southeast Division is in the midst of a 47-year drought. The division hasn’t been represented in the finals since Green Valley High appeared and lost in 1995 and hasn’t won since Basic defeated Carson City for the 2A title in 1960. But a strong senior class and a handful of Division I prospects could put the Southeast back on the map.

Foothill junior quarterback Aaron Dupin is out to prove last year was a fluke. The Falcons were Henderson’s top program for most of the past seven years as they won five Southeast Division titles. But they missed the playoffs last year for the first time since the school’s inaugural year in 1999, opening the season with five straight setbacks and finishing 2-7.

Del Sol will have a different look this year after graduating several from its previously strong offensive line.
