Silverado couple master long-distance relationship

Husband and wife Don and Michele Shafe have a long-distance relationship.
The Silverado-area residents have been biking in one form or another for 25 years and are currently training for the 118-mile RTC Viva Bike Vegas ride through Boulder City, Henderson, Las Vegas and Summerlin on Saturday.

Coronado, Foothill help raise $3,000 to battle breast cancer

While the Coronado and Foothill girls volleyball teams battled each other on the court Oct. 16, the real battle was against breast cancer as $3,000 was raised for research at Coronado’s Dig Pink night.
Both the Cougars and Falcons donned pink and white uniforms, distinguishable only by Foothill’s pink socks, while fans were encouraged to wear pink shirts and participate in a raffle to raise funds for Side-Out, a breast cancer research and awareness organization.

A senior on UNLV’s men’s swimming team, Ellingsen is so dedicated to helping the Rebels capture a fifth straight Mountain West Conference crown this year that he voluntarily relinquished his scholarship so the program could sign a top swimmer from Canada.

The Vegas Kings of the Labelle Community Football League just finished their inaugural season by narrowly missing the playoffs after closing with a five-game winning streak.
Kings player and co-owner Richard Mapp, a Chaparral graduate and former receiver for UNLV, said he and co-owner Prentice Caesar founded the team with hopes of giving locals one last chance to play professionally.

At his fourth school in four years, Shaun Murray, a senior running back and safety at Liberty, has found a home.
After attending Palo Verde, Bonanza and Arbor View, Murray is now enrolled at Liberty while his family looks for a permanent home. Murray was unsure what role he would be able to play on a Patriots football team that had a number of returning starters.

NIAA adjusts high school bowling rules, proposes new wrestling tournament

High school bowling will undergo a trial makeover this winter in Southern Nevada after the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association's Board of Control voted Oct. 9 to change the scoring format for the coming season. The association was also slated to vote on expanding the state wrestling tournament from an eight-man bracket to a 16-man bracket to increase participation. However, the board did not reach a decision and coaches poll will be conducted by the next meeting in December.
Victory Bell finds home again at Foothill

Bells will be ringing again at Foothill in 2009. After losing the Victory Bell to Silverado in 2007 — the first time since the bell became part of the rivalry in 2001 — the Foothill football team brought it home with a 21-17 win over the Skyhawks Friday night.

In 2003, Jay Hieron was at a crossroads in life.
After years of dealing drugs in Brooklyn, N.Y., Hieron had been arrested and was facing jail time. To escape the stress of a lengthy court process and the looming threat of a prison sentence, the former high school and junior college wrestling champion turned to mixed martial arts.
When the judge opted to give Hieron five years probation, Hieron felt like he had a new lease on life and decided to dedicate that life to the sport that had helped him through the rough times.

The annual Victory Bell football game between Foothill and Silverado will have a different feel Friday.
For the for time in the eight-year history of this Southeast Division rivalry, the Silverado Skyhawks have possession of the bell after topping Foothill 25-18 last year. It was the Skyhawks' first win against Foothill since the bell was introduced to the rivalry in 2001.
