Chaparral, like every team in the Northeast Division, is seemingly fighting for second place behind perennial power Las Vegas High.
"Las Vegas is in a class by itself and we try to copy what they do," Chaparral coach Fernando Carmona said. "We can compete for that No. 2 spot.
We want to host a playoff game."
Chaparral will rely on its running game, which is anchored by four returning offensive linemen. Pierre Jones only had four carries last year but will be the featured back.
The Cowboys most significant game is Oct. 17 against Eldorado in the Cleat Game. The schools have been playing each other since the 1970s for a cleat (which has since been bronzed) donated for the rivalry by former Los Angeles Rams lineman Merlin Olson.
