UNR has BCS and championship aspirations following hot 2010 start

    October 3, 2010

A true “BCS buster” is a team that no one sees coming. So forget TCU and Boise State, two top five programs from non-BCS conferences. As good as those teams are, it would shock no one if either went undefeated and reached a BCS game for the second year in a row in January. UNR, on the other hand, would come as a total surprise.

Here is one piece of good news out of the UNLV football team’s 44-26 loss Saturday to UNR. Yes, the Rebels were defeated by the Wolf Pack for a series record sixth straight year, and yet there is still some light at the end of the tunnel for Rebel faithful. During the break between the first and second quarters, when the game was tied at seven and 21-point betting underdog UNLV was still threatening to pull off the upset, the Rebels’ basketball team was introduced to the crowd at Sam Boyd Stadium.

    October 3, 2010

Phillip Payne hadn't been necessarily invisible in 2010 entering the Rebels' fifth game on Saturday night against No. 25 Nevada-Reno. But for the first time as a junior, the preseason All-Mountain West receiver was a force to be reckoned with. In UNLV's 44-26 loss at Sam Boyd Stadium to rival UNR, Payne had a season-high eight catches and a career-high 170 yards.

Rivarly games in college football are known for being close-fought, emotional, tight battles. The 2009 contest between UNLV and Nevada-Reno, at the end of that October afternoon, was far from meeting all three of those criteria. October 1, 2010

Las Vegas’ passion for UNLV and disdain for UNR reaches its highest levels this week, except for in the sports books. The Wolf Pack will attract the majority of the action in this year’s edition of the annual rivalry game that kicks off at 7 p.m. Saturday at Sam Boyd Stadium. The Las Vegas Hilton Superbook opened UNR as an 18.5-point favorite and the line was up to 20.5 by Thursday evening.

Time to celebrate the first win of his UNLV career was short, and Bobby Hauck's welcome back to the grindstone early this week is film of a 6-foot-6, 220-pound nightmare who appears to be all but unstoppable right now.
