Rebels have a little momentum going into conference tournament at home

It turns out there is a tangible cost for victory, and in UNLV’s case that price is one iPhone. On May 6, with the Rebels (26-29, 7-17) in the heat of a race for the final spot in this weekend’s four-team Mountain West Conference baseball tournament in Las Vegas, UNLV scored four runs in the ninth inning for a crucial 5-4 victory at San Diego State.

UNLV’s golf team — ranked No. 7 in the country — will head this week to the NCAA regional’s without coach Dwaine Knight, who’s recovering from a recent surgery. In his place, assistant coach JC Deacon will lead the team in the Greensboro Regional this Thursday-Saturday as it attempts to qualify for the national tournament. “I have full confidence in JC to lead our team at the NCAA Regional,” Knight said in a statement.

UNLV's Lucia Batta is poised to become the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year after going 7-0 in league singles matches this spring. She’s ranked 60th in the nation with a 30-8 overall record after beginning her Lady Rebels career as the conference Freshman of the Year, all with an unconventional forehand borne out of an injury.

Jesse Garcia shouldn’t be in the game this early. The UNLV baseball team fell behind 5-0 last Saturday in the first inning against Nebraska-Omaha in the second game of a doubleheader. Enter the 6-foot, 185-pound Garcia, a senior left-handed relief pitcher with middling success this year. Before the weekend he was 1-1 with a 5.84 earned run average in eight appearances.

This loss will definitely sting for the UNLV women’s basketball team. However, the quarterfinal defeat on Wednesday in the Mountain West Conference tournament won’t take away from what has been a break through season. The Lady Rebels squandered a nine-point second half lead Wednesday with less than 10 minutes remaining against New Mexico at the Thomas & Mack Center, falling to recover after New Mexico connected on four consecutive 3-pointers to erase the deficit in a 61-58 loss.

When Tim Chambers took over the UNLV baseball program following the 2010 season, he knew that the first step toward building a nationally-recognized product was to excel in recruiting from the deep local talent pool. Last season, he was able to haul in several newcomers through his über-successful College of Southern Nevada pipeline. Now, he's pulling in the top prep ballplayers the Valley has to offer.

Adam Scott hit all the right shots Sunday in a round that was close to flawless and earned him his first World Golf Championship title. He celebrated with a caddie who has won quite a few more. Steve Williams, fired last month by Tiger Woods after a 12-year partnership, felt like a bigger winner when Scott rolled in one last birdie for a 5-under 65 and a four-shot victory in the Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio.

Not only was Tanner Peters the UNLV baseball team’s best pitcher this spring, the junior right-hander was also the best in the Mountain West Conference. Peters, who posted a 9-3 record with a 1.36 earned run average, was named Monday the 2011 Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Year as voted by the league’s coaches.

A brief five-minute tennis exhibition Saturday featuring the doubles team of UNLV football coach Bobby Hauck and basketball coach Dave Rice included plenty of laughable moments. The coaches missed long, hit the ball into the net, and on a few occasions, missed the ball altogether. But Hauck and Rice weren’t concerned with the outcome — they lost 7-4. Rather, it was being part of a community event the coaches said was most important.
