The Moapa Valley High football team appeared to be executing its game plan to near perfection on its first possession Saturday in the Division-IA state title game against three-time defending champion Truckee. Moapa Valley received the ball first and ran nearly 10 minutes off the clock with a 17-play drive. But despite bringing the ball to inside the Truckee 5-yard line, the Pirates had to settle for a field goal and 3-0 lead. The rest of the game followed a similar script. The Moapa Valley High football needed just one play Saturday to take the lead against visiting Lowry High in the Division I-A state semifinals. A double pass from Landon Willard to Sean McConnell went for a 45-yard touchdown, and the Pirates’ defense did the rest in a 43-0 victory.

The Moapa Valley High football team typically wins games behind the running of senior tailback Conner Mortensen. However, he’s not the Pirates’ only capable rusher. Take Friday night’s 36-32 victory against visiting Mojave to send the Pirates to the state semifinals for the seventh straight season as an example.

Moapa Valley is keeping the hammer once again. The Pirates won their eighth straight “Hammer Game” against heated rival Virgin Valley Friday night. This one wasn’t even close, as Moapa Valley thrilled its home crowd with a 47-6 blowout victory.

Jared Repp deserves a good night’s rest after Friday. The Moapa Valley junior did more in a single game against Pahrump Valley than some players will do for half of the season. Repp rushed for 109 yards, recorded 12 tackles and scored a touchdown on an interception return.

This series symbolized a first game full of mistakes for the Moapa Valley High football team Saturday night. With four minutes remaining during the Sollenberger Classic’s small-school game at the University of Phoenix Stadium and the Pirates trailing by 15 points, they caught a small break when Blue Ridge High fumbled trying to run out the clock. After a few pass completions, Moapa Valley brought the ball to the Blue Ridge 1-yard line. However, they failed to score on four straight plays, eventually losing 23-14.

high school football: Small school game: Moapa Valley can't overcome turnovers in falling, 23-14
GLENDALE, Ariz. — The Palo Verde High football team lost this game in the third quarter. The Panthers were held to negative 1-yard on eight plays Saturday in the third quarter of the Sollenberger Classic against Arizona's Desert Vista High, seeing their three-point halftime lead quickly vanish in losing 20-10.
