The Moapa Valley High football team scored three touchdowns in the first quarter Thursday against visiting Desert Pines. Desert Pines ran just three plays and trailed 14-0 before even touching the ball. That quick start was all Moapa Valley needed in a 27-13 victory, winning the battle of undefeated teams in the regular season finale to capture the Division I-A Sunrise League title and No. 1 playoff seed.

Virgin Valley actually outscored Moapa Valley over the final 30 minutes of the game, but the Pirates were able to post an impressive 53-35 win by virtue of a 20-0 lead built at the beginning of the night.

Quarterback Zach Hymas completed 11-of-20 passes for 212 yards with two touchdowns and Moapa Valley overcame a rough start to cruise to a 52-14 victory against Boulder City tonight.

Southern Nevada’s fierce fall winds have ruined plenty of game plans over the years. Luckily Division 1-A powerhouse Moapa Valley always has contingency plans. The Pirates battled less than ideal conditions at Chaparral to win 38-6 Friday night.

Moapa Valley High is still the team to beat in the Division I-A. The Pirates were expected to receive a challenge today from Mojave, which gave them a big-time scare in last year’s playoffs. However, the Pirates scored the game’s initial five touchdowns in a 35-6 victory.

Nothing will come easy against the Moapa Valley defense this year. The Pirates went 7 1/2 quarters without giving up any points this season until Clark found the end zone late in Saturday’s game. Other than losing a second straight shutout, however, the score was insignificant.

The Moapa Valley High football team appeared to be executing its game plan to near perfection on its first possession Saturday in the Division-IA state title game against three-time defending champion Truckee. Moapa Valley received the ball first and ran nearly 10 minutes off the clock with a 17-play drive. Conner Mortensen rushed for three touchdowns and added a 67-yard punt return as Moapa Valley cruised to another blowout victory with a 65-0 rout of Pahrump Valley in the opening round of the Division-IA playoffs Thursday.
