What a difference a year makes. Last February, Vernon Fox took the stage in the Faith Lutheran auditorium and spoke to players for the first time as their football coach. He told them they would win — immediately. One year later, they returned to the same auditorium for another meeting with their coach. Like he predicted, they were winners.

Keenan Smith had a pair of first-half touchdown runs today for the Faith Lutheran High football team and the Crusaders forced seven turnovers, winning the first state championship in program history with a 17-0 victory over Churchill County of Fallon for the Division 1-A title in Reno.

Before the Faith Lutheran High football took the field for practice Tuesday, players and coaches gathered in the endzone for a few minutes of devotion. That’s how practice starts each afternoon at the Summerlin school. The Crusaders don’t stretch or go through other warmup routines without a religious lesson and prayer. And not just a prayer recited from memory — it’s something meaningful to their journey, on the field and in life. The Faith Lutheran High football team forced three turnovers today against visiting Lowry High of Northern Nevada in the Division I-A state semifinals, including an interception by Vinny DeGeorge with 24 seconds remaining to seal the Crusaders’ 16-8 victory.

The Faith Lutheran and Desert Pines football teams didn’t let either of its fan bases down Friday, engaging in a thrilling shootout that could have gone either way. In the end, Fabian LaGudi’s two-yard touchdown run in the closing minutes gave Faith Lutheran the lead for good in a 48-41 victory over Desert Pines in the Division I-A Southern Region semifinals, giving the Crusaders their 10th straight victory.

We are getting to the part of the high school football season where rankings won’t be necessary. The best team will be determined on the field in the postseason. The Division I-A playoffs begin Friday with Sunrise champ Moapa Valley and Sunset champ Faith Lutheran as No. 1 seeds. Faith Lutheran, which is riding an eight-game winning streak, has done enough to enter our top 10 rankings.
