Scott Maughan carried the ball 28 times for 120 yards and two touchdowns today in leading the Pahrump Valley football team to a 28-6 victory against visiting Chaparral in the season opener for both Division I-A schools.

Chaparral High football coach Bill Froman didn’t hesitate throwing younger players into the lineup last season, knowing the growing pains experienced early in their careers could turn into a good thing. Chaparral missed the playoffs by one game in finishing 4-5 overall, but the coach feels the program took a step in the right direction because some returning players got more than their share of varsity action.

high school football: Upgrades at Chaparral and Western include everything from multiple sets of uniforms and pads to a state-of-the-art weight room and other extras
Players on the Western High School football team had just finished a morning workout in the school’s weight room this week when coach Donnie Davis told them they had more weight to lift. But this would be a lot more fun. Minutes later, players were walking from the front office carrying large boxes with new helmets.

Walking up and down the Desert Pines High football team’s sideline Friday night during their 48-28 victory against Chaparral, it was obvious the Jaguars players had a different attitude. The Jaguars, after struggling to start the season, are a confident a bunch. And that makes them one of Division-IA’s most dangerous teams.

If Virgin Valley can figure out how to play well off the bus, coach Chris Sawyers said, then it will really be in business. As it is, the Bulldogs had enough in the second half to hold off Chaparral and improve to 4-1 with a 28-25 road victory.

high school football: Antonio Thomas' near 200-yard rushing day and two touchdowns helps Chaparral end three-game skid against Eldorado
Chaparral High football coach Bill Froman knew winning the “Cleat Game” rivalry against Eldorado would a big deal. He just didn’t realize how emotional his players would become when they finally got their hands on the bronzed cleat NFL great Merlin Olsen donated to the rivalry in the 1970s. Chaparral’s Antonio Thomas rushed for 190 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries in leading the Cowboys to a 52-14 win.

Antonio Thomas had roughly 250 yards of total offense and three touchdowns, helping the Chaparral High football team erase a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit with eight minutes to play and beat visiting Sierra Vista, 28-25. “Our kids didn’t quit. They didn’t lay down,” Chaparral coach Bill Froman said.

Improved team strength could translate into wins for Chaparral

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL:
Bill Froman became the Chaparral High football coach last May. By then, it was too late to fix the program’s biggest weaknesses: the players’ overall strength. Froman was the team’s third head coach in four years and knew from the first practice that his players lacked the proper weight training to be competitive. They won just one game.
