    When Bishop Gorman High’s Gio Guzman was verbally committed in late March to play college basketball at Division I Florida International, the 5-foot-10 point guard assumed the recruiting process was over. But, in the two weeks from when he committed to when he was scheduled to sign a letter of intent, Florida International coach Isaiah Thomas was unexpectedly fired — leaving Guzman without a team.

    The most prolific high school basketball player in Las Vegas history won’t stray far from home for his college career. Bishop Gorman senior Shabazz Muhammad, the nation’s top high school senior according to Rivals.com, announced Wednesday that he would attend UCLA next year.

    Findlay Prep wins third national title in four years with a thrilling 86-83 OT victory

    Nigel Williams-Goss hit a floater with just less than 20 seconds left, and Brandon Ashley finished with 31 points as Findlay Prep erased an 18-point deficit and defeated Montverde 86-83 in overtime for the ESPN National High School Invitational Championship. It’s the Pilots third title in four years (2009 and 10) at the tournament, which is played in Bethesda, Md.

    Findlay Prep senior Winston Shepard scored 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting Friday in the semifinals of the ESPN National High School Invitational Championship and the Pilots limited St. Benedict’s (N.J.) to four second-quarter points in a 68-55 victory. The win puts Findlay in the tournament’s title game, where the Henderson-based school will play Montrose Christian at 11 a.m. Saturday looking for their third title in four years at the Betheda, Md., event.

    Shabazz Muhammad shines at McDonald’s game, trims UNLV off list of suitors

    UNLV is out of the race to sign hometown basketball star Shabazz Muhammad of Bishop Gorman. ESPN recruiting expert Dave Telep reported Wednesday during the telecast of the McDonald’s All-American game in Chicago that the 6-foot-6 Muhammad, the nation’s No. 1 overall recruiting prospect, has trimmed his list of schools to three — Duke, Kentucky and UCLA. Also, in Telep’s blog, which is part of the ESPN Insider package, Muhammad hints he is closer to a decision. “I’m considering five but there are three that [stand out],” Muhammad told Telep.

    Findlay Prep out for redemption at ESPN national championship event

    The high school basketball playoffs recently concluded for most teams across the nation. But for Henderson-based Findlay Prep, they are just beginning. On Thursday, the Pilots (29-1) will play at 5 p.m. against Coolridge Senior High of the Washington D.C. area in the quarterfinals of the eight-team ESPN National High School Invitational Championship at Georgetown Prep Bethesda, Md. The tournament will be televised by the ESPN family of networks, with Thursday’s game on ESPNU — the 14th time Findlay has played on ESPN since April 2009.

    Bishop Gorman High’s Shabazz Muhammad posted two perfect scores on his way to winning the slam dunk contest Monday at the Powerade Jam Fest in Chicago. The competition is a prelude to Wednesday’s McDonald’s All-American game.
