Early career: In 1962, she met Sonny Bono, who was working for Phil Spector at Gold Star Studios in Hollywood. Through Bono's influence, she became a session and backup singer. In 1964, she released singles under the names of "Bonnie Jo Mason" and "Cherilyn" and also with Sonny, as "Caesar and Cleo."
Breakthrough: In 1965, in the first "Sonny and Cher" album, "Look at Us," the single "I Got You Babe" climbed to No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 list. Cher was 19 years old.
Hits: From "I Got You Babe" (with Sonny) in 1965 to "Believe" in 1998, she holds the female record for the longest span of No. 1 hits, 33 years. She has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide.
Honors: She won a Golden Globe Award for the "Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour" in 1974. She received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in 1984 for "Silkwood," and won the Academy Award for Best Actress in "Moonstruck" in 1988. She won a Grammy Award in 1988 for "Believe," at the age of 52.
Current: Following her "Farewell Tour," from 2002 to 2005, she took three years off before announcing in 2008 that she would perform 200 shows over three years at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

A bronchial condition has led to the cancellation of two more Cher performances at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, and she will not return to the stage until 2009.
