Rivalries galore

Hammer, bell, bowl, bulls, roses and more. Ray Brewer and Case Keefer discus the numerous rivalry games taking place across the valley in this week's slate of high school football games.

For the first time in more than a decade, the hammer is staying in Mesquite for back-to-back years.

After breaking through to snap a long losing streak to rival Moapa Valley last season, Virgin Valley one-upped itself by winning even bigger this year. The Bulldogs took down the Pirates 26-14 on the road Friday night.

“It’s huge,” Virgin Valley coach Yori Ludvigson said. “You’ve got to beat your rival, and I’m happy to have a rival again. They’re a great team, but I think our (offensive) line and (defensive) line really controlled the game.”

The Bulldogs’ dominance in the trenches paved the way for senior running back Jayden Perkins, who went off for 214 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries. Perkins also caught a touchdown pass from senior quarterback Cade Anderson, who totaled 145 passing yards.

Almost all of the game’s points were scored in the first quarter and a half, which featured four lead changes until a touchdown pass from Anderson to junior Vicente Pentos put the Bulldogs up for good. Virgin Valley was able to bear down on defense after Moapa Valley sophomore Hayden Redd proved tough to contain early in the game.

“We made some adjustments and played well on defense,” Ludvigson said. “It helped that on offense, we controlled the ball throughout and burned the clock.”
