Spring Valley tinkered with its pass defense in practice this week.
The adjustments paid off, as the Grizzlies shut down Clark’s passing game en route to a 27-8 victory in a league game at home Friday night.
“We just played smart, assignment ball,” Spring Valley coach Marcus Teal said. “Everyone got involved.”
Senior cornerback Mitchell Otis was the leader of the revamped secondary, picking off two Clark passes. Junior Austin Connors also had an interception.
Offensively, Spring Valley did enough to never need to sweat the outcome. The Grizzlies raced out to a 21-0 lead with senior Kevin Benoza Jr. piling up more than 130 yards and a touchdown. Senior Clark Genneken scored the first two touchdowns of his career, with senior Kash Jenkins accounting for the other touchdown.
Clark threatened to mount a comeback on a couple of occasions, but Spring Valley always seemed to come up with a timely turnover or stop.
