Respect many different opinions

I just read a letter from a conservative complaining that the Sun was too liberal and ignored the conservative point of view. I try to be a centrist myself, and from that perspective I find there are extreme conservatives who deem anything that does not represent them is liberal. Same with the liberals who will not listen to ideas different than theirs.

For me, both extremes think too narrowly. I can embrace ideas from both camps. For example, I think the government gives too much to the poor, just as I think the government gives too much to the rich, leaving the middle class — my demographic — to slowly crumble away.

America, with all of its flaws, still has one great thing going for it: the freedom to think and speak our minds without some crazy bunch coming after us with Uzis. All of this would even be greater if those extremists would show a little respect for the rest of us who do not mimic them.
