letter to the editor:

A major flaw in Obama’s strategy

There is a great deal of debate about the president’s strategy regarding the Islamic State. Is it tough enough or is it a house of cards about to collapse due to a woeful failure to assess the initial foundation on which it was built?

The strategy’s main failure is in its inherent reliance on a U.S.-built coalition for the fighting forces on the ground, with the president assuring his base and the world that the United States will drop bombs on the Islamic State but not provide boots on the ground. President Barack Obama is committed to keeping U.S. ground troops out of the region, making his strategy inherently flawed.

The United States must furnish boots on the ground because except for the Kurds in Iraq and perhaps the reeling Iraqi armed forces, no one is standing in line to help.

Obama’s strategy was underwater when he announced it. He eventually will have to break the news that the United States will have to furnish ample people in the trenches for the Islamic State to be defeated. Since the group is growing quickly, this decision must be swiftly made and implemented.
