UNLV's Got (Don't Say) Talent

On this episode of UNLV's Got Talent, Rebels beat writer Taylor Bern tells colleagues Ray Brewer and Case Keefer why they need to stop using that word as the go-to for UNLV's basketball program.

The Rebels have signed their first recruit in the class of 2015, and they could get a commitment from another player tomorrow on national TV.

First, the signee. Canadian guard Jalen Poyser signed his national letter of intent today on the first day of the NCAA’s early signing period (Nov. 12-19). Poyser, who played the 2012-13 season at Findlay Prep under now-UNLV assistant Todd Simon, committed to the Rebels just 11 days ago. He had been in town for the Scarlet and Gray Showcase on Oct. 16 and also received an in-home visit from Simon and coach Dave Rice in Brampton, Ontario.

Then there’s the impending decision from Derrick Jones, a 6-foot-7 wing from Pennsylvania who’s ranked No. 42 by Rivals. Jones said today that he will go on ESPNU tomorrow from 3 to 4 p.m. Las Vegas time during the network’s signing day special to make his announcement between UNLV, Auburn and UConn.

Like Poyser, Jones was in town for the Scarlet and Gray Showcase, the only official visit he’s taken, and the coaches dropped by for an in-home visit. Getting a commitment would be a big victory for assistant Ryan Miller, who was previously on staff at Auburn.
